Uno de los pueblos de ultramar dominados por Doña Europa tuvo la osadía de rebelarse, en 1776, emancipándose de la tutela, y se volvió más poderoso que ella: el Tío Sam.
El profesor Maquiavelo le enseñó a Doña Europa que cuando no se puede vencer al enemigo es mejor aliarse con él. Por eso ella se asoció al Tío Sam para ejercer dominio sobre el mundo.
Doña Europa y el Tío Sam acumularon tan exagerada riqueza que cedieron a la ilusión de que serían eternos el lujo y la ostentación en que vivían. Todo en sus casas era maravilloso. Y sus monedas relucían unas sobre otras.
Pero no hay casa sin cimientos, ni árbol sin raíces o riqueza sin peso. Para mantener el estilo de vida al que se habían acostumbrado, Doña Europa y el Tío Sam gastaban más de lo que tenían; y de repente constataron que se encontraban apabullados por deudas astronómicas. ¿Qué harían?
La primera medida fue la adoptada durante una turbulencia en un viaje en avión: abrocharse los cinturones. No el de ellos, claro, sino el de sus empleados: despidieron a algunos, a otros les bajaron el sueldo, dejaron de consumir productos importados… de ese modo la crisis del dúo se extendió por todas partes.
Doña Europa y el Tío Sam no son tontos. Saben dónde está el dinero: en los bancos. El Tío Sam, viendo el rumbo de su economía, puso a funcionar la máquina de la Casa de la Moneda y socorrió a los bancos con al menos US$ 180 mil millones.
Doña Europa tiene varias hijas. Según ella, algunas no supieron administrar bien su fortuna. La hermosa Grecia parece haber perdido la sabiduría; gastó mucho más de lo que podía. Y lo mismo sucedió con la seductora Italia, la encantadora España y la tímida Irlanda.
