El sacerdote belga José Comblin, uno de los más importantes representantes de la Teología de la Liberación y que llegó a ser expulsado de Chile y de Brasil por sus ideas, murió hoy a los 88 años en la ciudad brasileña de Simoes Filho de causas naturales, informaron fuentes eclesiásticas.
Comblin, un estudioso de la Iglesia de América Latina y autor de obras como “Teología de la Liberación”, “Teología de la Azada” e “Ideología da Seguridad Nacional”, murió en la pequeña ciudad de Simoes Filho, en el estado de Bahía (nordeste) y a donde había acudido para dar un curso a comunidades de base.
El sacerdote, que tenía problemas cardíacos y usaba marcapasos, fue encontrado muerto en el cuarto en el que estaba alojado por otros religiosos que lo esperaban para la oración matinal y que extrañaron su demora.
El cuerpo del religioso belga será velado hoy en la ciudad de Salvador, capital regional y próxima a Simoes Filho, y sepultado en una pequeña población del empobrecido estado brasileño de Paraíba según sus deseos, dijeron a Efe voceros de la Archidiócesis de Barra, también en el estado de Bahía y en donde residía.
Comblin fue uno de los seguidores y principales asesores del obispo brasileño Hélder Cámara, el defensor de los derechos humanos y de la opción de la Iglesia por los pobres que llegó a ser conocido durante la dictadura brasileña como el “obispo rojo”.
Además de especializarse en estudios sobre la Iglesia latinoamericana, el religioso belga contribuyó en la construcción de la Teología de la Liberación, especialmente de la dirigida a los agricultores pobres y a los habitantes de comunidades rurales.
Comblin, que nació en Bruselas el 22 de marzo de 1923, fue ordenado como sacerdote en 1947 y se graduó como doctor en Teología en la Universidad Católica de Louvain.
El religioso llegó por primera vez a Brasil en 1958 para atender la petición del papa Pío XII para que los sacerdotes europeos actuasen como misioneros voluntarios en regiones con falta de sacerdotes.
Se estableció inicialmente en Campinas, en el interior del estado de Sao Paulo en donde sirvió como profesor y se acercó a la Juventud Obrera Católica, para la que trabajó como asesor.
En Sao Paulo, en donde permaneció hasta 1962 antes de viajar a Chile, fue profesor en la Escuela Teológica de los Dominicos de frailes que se destacarían después como teólogos de la liberación y en la resistencia a la dictadura brasileña, entre los cuales Frei Betto y Frei Tito.
Tras tres años dando clases en la Facultad de Teología de Chile, regresó a Brasil en 1965 al recibir una invitación de Hélder Cámara, entonces obispo de Recife, para desempeñarse como profesor en el Instituto de Teología de Recife.
Sus obras polémicas y su trabajo con los teólogos de la liberación lo convirtieron en blanco del régimen militar brasileño, que ordenó su arresto y deportación en 1971.
Vivió durante 8 años como exiliado en Chile en donde ayudó a crear un seminario rural en Talca, pero, tras la publicación de un libro sobre la ideología de la seguridad nacional, fue expulsado por el régimen de Augusto Pinochet en 1978.
El sacerdote belga regresó entonces a Brasil para trabajar en el estado de Paraíba, en donde fundó un seminario rural, pero, como ingresó al país con una visa de turista, fue obligado a viajar cada tres meses al exterior para renovar la autorización.
Su situación legal apenas fue regularizada tras la ley de amnistía de 1979.
Además de sus obras teológicas y de los seminarios que ayudó a fundar, Comblin también creó varios movimientos para laicos, como Misioneros del Campo y Misioneros del Medio Popular.
