Nesta semana cumpríronse trinta anos da morte de Óscar Romero, como todos os anos dende a súa morte escríbironse milleiros de palabras no seu nome. A continuación achegamos este texto de Carlos Mario Castro titulado: "Óscar Romero: O paso de Deus polas nosas vidas".

Mi abuela y yo, llegamos a las 2 de la tarde a la Catedral de San Salvador. Monseñor Romero iba a celebrar una misa en la cripta de la Catedral en memoria de un sacerdote asesinado por defender los derechos humanos de los pobres. Mi abuela era seguidora de Monseñor Romero, una más de aquellas mujeres maduras que no se perdían casi ninguna de las homilías dominicales del obispo Romero –aunque eso significara venir desde muy lejos para poder escucharlo. No sé cómo lo había conocido, probablemente cuando Monseñor Romero era sencillamente el padre Romero, párroco de la iglesia central de San Miguel, tal vez cuando Óscar Romero fue obispo de la diócesis de Santiago de María… No sé, pero mi abuela quedó atrapada de la manera de predicar de Monseñor Romero, de la claridad y la fuerza con que hablaba, y por eso lo había seguido por cuanta parroquia él pasaba.
Lentamente la se llenaron las bancas de la cripta de la Catedral. Apareció Monseñor Romero con sus ropas sacerdotales; la gente se puso en pie e hizo una valla para recibirlo con un prolongado aplauso. Él caminaba solemnemente, su báculo levantado, repartiendo bendiciones mientras se acercaba al altar. En el momento en que pasaba frente a nosotros, mi abuela me tomó del brazo y alargando mi mano me hizo tocarlo, para luego guiar esa mano por la frente y el pecho, santiguándome. Fue un rito curioso y significativo: curioso porque esa era una costumbre que mi abuela me hacía cumplir solamente con las imágenes de los santos de las iglesias para pedir su bendición, y significativo porque eso quería decir que Monseñor Romero representaba algo más que el simple obispo que en aquel momento pasaba frente a nosotros. Con el tiempo he comprendido que mi abuela me estaba diciendo, con el lenguaje sencillo pero profundo de la fe, lo que más tarde, con otras palabras menos sencillas, diría Ignacio Ellacuría: que en aquellos momentos era Dios mismo pasando delante de nosotros en la persona de Monseñor Romero. O dicho en profano, el paso de Monseñor Romero por nuestras vidas era el paso de un modelo excepcional de ser humano.
Todos los domingos mi familia encendía desde temprano la radio. El aroma de tamales y café flotaba en el ambiente, mezclándose con los tonos de la homilía de Monseñor Romero, que hablaba por la radio con su voz sencilla, valiente y clara. Todavía en el recuerdo puedo escuchar los aplausos de la gente en Catedral cuando Monseñor Romero decía algo con lo que ellos estaban de acuerdo. Aquellos aplausos que más nunca se han vuelto a escuchar fueron el símbolo de la cercanía amistosa entre un obispo singular y su pueblo.
Un domingo mi abuela me llevó a una de esas homilías. La catedral estaba a reventar. Había muchos periodistas, nacionales y extranjeros, gente importante y bien vestida, y mucha gente sencilla y pobre. Me quedé sentado a los pies del púlpito desde donde Monseñor iba a hablar. Allí había otros niños, y alrededor de nosotros algunas grabadoras de periodistas o de gente común que quería grabar la homilía. Monseñor habló de Dios que ama la justicia, habló del proyecto de Jesús de construir una sociedad basada en el amor, la justicia, la paz y la tolerancia. Habló de la conversión cristiana como fruto del encuentro sincero entre Dios y la humanidad. Hubo un momento en la homilía cuando Monseñor hizo una recapitulación de los hechos más sobresalientes sucedidos durante la semana en el país: el ejército había entrado a una aldea campesina y había desaparecido a personas por su vinculación a grupos cristianos o a organizaciones populares; en tal carretera el socorro jurídico del arzobispado había exhumado cadáveres con evidentes y crueles señales de tortura. Monseñor Romero se notaba muy afectado por todos los atropellos que mucha gente sencilla estaba sufriendo en diferentes partes de El Salvador. Por eso buscaba iluminar con la palabra de Dios a una sociedad oscurecida por los odios de clase. Intentaba señalar el camino a todos los que sucumbían ante los espejismos del poder, del dinero, de la violencia, sembrar la semilla de un mañana mejor para las vidas de innumerables salvadoreños, eternas víctimas de la distribución desigual de la riqueza.
Muchos que entonces éramos niños queríamos ser como Monseñor Romero cuando fuéramos adultos. Él se convirtió en un modelo de ser humano y de cristiano; un referente a dónde mirar para encontrar la belleza de valores como la honradez, la solidaridad con las víctimas de la historia, para luchar con perseverancia y convicción por hacer de la compleja aldea humana un lugar fraterno donde el amor fuera la norma y no la excepción. La figura de Monseñor Romero se transformó en un ideal de persona, en alguien cuyos valores humanos teníamos que seguir y cultivar para alcanzar una condición humana más plena y auténtica. De hecho muchos jugábamos a ser Monseñor Romero; nos poníamos unas mantas y dramatizábamos sus homilías dominicales.
Ha pasado el tiempo, han cambiado muchas cosas. La Catedral y El Salvador ya no son lo que eran cuando nuestras vidas vieron pasar a Monseñor Romero. Nosotros, los de entonces, tampoco somos los mismos. Los niños nos convertimos en adultos, los adultos en viejos, en memoria y polvo. Y mientras tanto, la figura de Monseñor Romero se ha globalizado, llegando hasta los corazones humanos más distantes y diversos, que han encontrado en su vida y en su mensaje una fuente diáfana de inspiración y esperanza. Monseñor Romero representa el convencimiento lúcido de que vale la pena luchar por la humanidad en esta hora de pesimismos y desesperanzas. Su mensaje resulta aún más vital hoy que crece la indiferencia, hoy que los cómplices de los poderosos son más, hoy que la arrogancia del dinero sigue sembrando la semilla del egoísmo, de la intolerancia y de la injusticia.
Un día murió mi abuela. Su agonía fue larga y silenciosa. Pero estoy seguro de que, en esa inconsciencia que lentamente llega con la muerte; ella, al igual que Aureliano Buendía frente al pelotón de fusilamiento, recordaba aquella remota tarde de mayo de 1979, cuando con ilusión me llevó a la Catedral de San Salvador a conocer a Monseñor Romero.
