Apenas cinco días después de su traslado desde Liberia, el sacerdote de la Orden Hospitalaria de San Juan de Dios, Miguel Pajares, ha fallecido este martes a causa del virus del ébola. Fuentes de la Consejería de Madrid han confirmado su fallecimiento, a las 9,28 horas de la mañana, después de que el religioso fuera repatriado a España para recibir un medicamento experimental, ZMapp, con el que poder curar la enfermedad.

Pajares había recibido el medicamento experimental y parecía que en los últimos días se encontraba estable. Por el momento no se le podrá hacer autopsia, dado que el virus sigue siendo contagioso. Por su parte, la Orden de San Juan de Dios «agradece todas las muestras de apoyo que ha recibido desde las administraciones púbicas, de la sociedad en general y particularmente el buen hacer de los profesionales del hospital que han atendiendo al Hno. Pajares». La OHSJD no dará entrevistas ni declaraciones.

La carga viral y el estado del paciente influyen en la rapidez con la que avanza la enfermedad y esa velocidad es clave, pues el cuerpo humano puede no tener tiempo para generar anticuerpos, que son células que fabrica específicamente para luchar contra el virus.

Si una persona, como era el caso del padre Miguel, sufre además una enfermedad previa tiene más riesgo de fallecer debido a que su organismo no está en buenas condiciones como para responder a una infección de estas dimensiones.

Pajares, de 75 años de edad, trabajaba como misionero en Liberia por la Orden San Juan de Dios fue repatriado la semana por el Gobierno para ser tratado de la afección en suelo español.

El religioso, natural de La Iglesuela (Toledo) y capellán del hospital que dirige la orden San Juan de Dios, llegó al contiente africano en la década de los 60. Primero estuvo en Ghana y desde 2007 trabajaba en el hospital San José, como director espiritual y responsable de la Pastoral de los enfermos.

Miguel Pajares, de 75 años, había contraído la infección al estar en contacto con el director del Hospital de San José en Monrovia (Liberia), el camerunés Patrick Nshamdze, al que le habían realizado un test que dio un falso negativo. El sacerdote, que había tomado medidas preventivas, se relajó en su trato y, debido al contacto con el paciente, terminó infectado con este virus.

El caso del padre Miguel y del resto de trabajadores del Hospital San José es uno más en la larga lista de médicos, enfermeras, cooperantes y religiosos que han contraído la enfermedad por estar en contacto con pacientes. Los últimos casos han sido el médico nigeriano que trató al que de momento es el único fallecido por el ébola en Nigeria, la hermana Chantal y del religioso George Combey, compañeros de Pajares.
