Javier Baeza Atienza, cura rojo, no salió de la nada. Pertenece a una larga estirpe de religiosos a pie de obra que inauguró el Padre Llanos en El Pozo del Tío Raimundo en los años sesenta. El pasado jueves dejó plantados a los representantes del Ayuntamiento de Madrid. Querían hablar sobre el asentamiento de gitanos rumanos de El Gallinero (una insalubre aglomeración de más de 500 personas, muchas de ellas niños, en una ciénaga pegada a la carretera de Valencia). “No quisimos ir porque no nos iban a escuchar”, sentencia.
Javier Baeza, madrileño de 45 años, se crió entre los barrios de Canillejas y San Blas. Su padre tenía una tienda de electrodomésticos. Una familia con cinco hijos sin particular fervor religioso, con excepción de su abuela “que era muy meapilas”. Estudió formación profesional, pero le echaron del instituto. “Era un pieza”, resume el cura, que montó una huelga de alumnos por el despido de uno de sus profesores y que protestaba contra “el elitismo” de que a los chicos del módulo profesional no les dejasen usar el campo de fútbol y a los que cursaban bachillerato en el mismo centro, sí. Antes, fue a un colegio de San Blas. El mismo y al mismo curso y clase en el que estudió el astronauta Pedro Duque: “Él fue al cielo y yo me hundí en la tierra”, rememora con su habitual sentido del humor.
A los 17 años, después de ser expulsado, se sintió perdido y a través de un amigo decidió entrar en el seminario. Su abuelo paterno, “el comunista”, lloró. Pero para Baeza fue una revelación. Muy pronto conoció a Enrique de Castro, un histórico de la religión a pie de obra y su maestro en los cursos también le marcó con una sentencia: “Sobran curas en las parroquias y faltan en la calle”. Durante 11 años fue responsable de la antigua iglesia de Vicálvaro. “Muy bonita, con muchas bodas y eso”, relata Baeza. Pero por las mañanas ya estaba ligado a la “parroquia roja”, como se conoce a San Carlos Borromeo. Ya andaba de juzgados o visitando personas sin recursos o con problemas de drogas. En 2004, definitivamente, se convirtió en el responsable oficial de Entrevías.
La iglesia de Entrevías es un lugar peculiar. Decorada con algún grafitti, Rouco Varela pretendió clausurarla en 2006. No se practicaba la liturgia correcta, argumentó. La presión de los vecinos y los medios de comunicación le hizo recular. La labor social de la parroquia en el barrio incluye cientos de actividades. Entre ellas, aparte de las caritativas clásicas, las de servir de parapeto a desahucios.
La actividad de los curas de San Carlos Borromeo en El Gallinero y en general la parte de Valdemingómez de La Cañada ha sido constante. En medio del desolador paisaje de toxicómanos que han colonizado esa parte de la senda pecuaria se alza la parroquia de Santo Domingo de la Calzada, con su muy simbólica cruz de ladrillo para que no la roben. Alrededor del templo, niños jugando a la pelota y cientos de jeringuillas que los religiosos recogen en un cubo a diario. El lugar sirve de dispensario médico, de consulta pediátrica y de escuela para los menores del asentamiento. Su última iniciativa ha sido una exposición fotográfica sobre los niños que viven en las infra-viviendas y que aún se puede ver de manera gratuita en el Centro Cultural Villa de Vallecas (hasta el 21 de octubre).
