“Os aseguro que los publicanos y las prostitutas os llevan la delantera en el camino del reino de Dios”. Con esta lapidaria frase, según cuenta el evangelio de Mateo, se dirigió Jesús a los sacerdotes, que utilizaban la posición que les daba la religión para hacer riqueza.
Esta visión la aplican hoy curas como Enrique de Castro, que lleva más de 40 años dedicando su vida a los desheredados desde una parroquia de Vallecas (Madrid), la San Carlos Borromeo, que ha servido de sede de asambleas a colectivos sociales en incontables ocasiones. El libro ‘Así en la tierra’ (Lectio Ediciones), de Marçal Sarrats, ha recogido la trayectoria de De Castro, ahora que el cura Javier Baeza le ha tomado el relevo.
En las misas, que poco gustan a una Conferencia Episcopal comandada por el cardenal ultraconservador Rouco Varela, no hay liturgia. Se comentan fragmentos de la Biblia y problemas del barrio. Todos participan y el cura no viste sotana, sino unos vaqueros. En vez de obleas, el cuerpo de Cristo es un pan casero. Hay quien puede pensar que todo esto es herejía pero, en la San Carlos Borromeo, las convenciones de la Iglesia son lo de menos. Lo importante es otra cosa.
¿Cómo decidió meterse a cura?
Fue por etapas. Me lo planteé cuando terminé bachillerato y me fui a Santander, a Comillas, donde estaba el seminario. Allí pasé 5 años sin que nos dejaran ir al pueblo. Estábamos entre curas y vacas todo el tiempo. Tuve que estudiar dos años de latín y griego, ya que había hecho el bachillerato de ciencias, y luego tres años de filosofía. Entonces dejé de verle sentido a estar allí y me marché. Me vine a Madrid, que es de donde soy, convalidé la filosofía en la Complutense y me puse a dar clases en colegios. Un tiempo después, decidí estudiar Teología, porque ya habían trasladado la facultad de Comillas a Madrid. En el último año de carrera, a los 28 años, me planteé ser cura de nuevo.
¿Qué cambió para que no fuera un cura “convencional”?
Nosotros ya en la universidad vivimos una etapa de cierta renovación dentro de la Iglesia, recién celebrado el Concilio Vaticano II. Allí empezaron los primeros brotes de muchas de las cosas que hacemos ahora. Incluso en el seminario de Comillas hacíamos misa participativa, donde la gente hablaba. Estuve yendo además a algunas charlas de marxismo-cristianismo. En definitiva, aunque yo provenía del mundo burgués y universitario, estuvimos en determinados ambientes de una Iglesia un tanto abierta. También me acuerdo que siendo chaval, en el colegio, íbamos los domingos a llevar comida a Las Ventas. Más arriba todo eran chabolas y cuevas. Y nos llevaban allí a repartir comida a los niños pobres.
¿Cuándo da el salto y se va a trabajar a Vallecas?
Cuando yo me ordeno como cura, en 1972, es cuando decido venirme. Preferí estar en un barrio obrero. Me ordené en marzo, pedí venir a Vallecas y ya en junio me trasladaron. Había un cura aquí en el barrio, en una parroquia, que estaba buscando un compañero y me vine con él. En aquel entonces, Vallecas era muy distinto a todo lo que anteriormente había vivido. Aquí la gente es muy espontánea, lo que creo que es una de sus mejores cualidades. La mayoría eran inmigrantes españoles, de Extremadura, Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha, que habían venido a trabajar a Madrid, porque se planeaba convertir esto en un gran cinturón industrial para competir con Barcelona. La gente venía a cambio de nada. No les daban ni casas, ni servicios, ni nada. Ellos mismos se construían sus casitas, durante la noche. Se decía entonces que cuando estaba el tejado puesto ya no podían echarte. Así que se compraban parcelas de 30 o 40 metros y ahí iban haciendo sus casitas, sus chabolas y demás. Vallecas, que en los años 50 tenía 25.000 habitantes, superaba ya los 300.000 cuando llegué yo. Ha sido un barrio de aluvión, de relleno, sin servicios.
¿Cómo fueron los comienzos?
Como digo, la gente era muy sencilla, muy espontánea, de llamar al pan pan y al vino vino. El trato era muy cordial, te acogían muy bien y te observaban, porque aquella no era gente religiosa. Te encontrabas las costumbres sociales de bautizos, bodas, comuniones y ese tipo de cosas, pero no una gente de ir a misa salvo en el caso de unos grupos concretos. En las zonas en que yo me moví también había gente muy religiosa pero muy franquista, porque aquí se construyeron colonias en el franquismo para gentes del Movimiento. Eran muy fieles al régimen y vivían ese catolicismo. Cuando llegué, [el cardenal Vicente Enrique y] Tarancón llevaba un año ya en Madrid. Tarancón, que había sido colocado por el Papa Pablo VI -potenciador del Concilio Vaticano II y de la Teología de la Liberación-, impulsó una apertura muy fuerte en la Iglesia. Empezó el movimiento de curas obreros. Cuando yo llego aquí ya había curas trabajando en diferentes oficios, y yo comencé también, para vivir de nuestro sueldo. Eran los últimos años del franquismo. Estaban luchando de manera intensa los movimientos obreros en la clandestinidad, y, por otro lado, tomaron fuerta los movimientos vecinales.
