Como en los mitos antiguos, montó en un rayo celeste y llegó a la Tierra unas semanas antes de Navidad. Asumió la forma de un barrendero que limpiaba las calles. Así podía ver mejor a la gente que pasaba, las tiendas todas iluminadas y llenas de cosas envueltas para regalo y especialmente a sus hermanas y hermanos más pequeños que andaban por ahí, mal vestidos y muchos con hambre, pidiendo limosna.
Se entristeció sobremanera porque se dio cuenta de que casi nadie seguía estas palabras que él había dicho: “quien recibe a uno de estos niños en mi nombre a mí me recibe” (Marcos 9,37).
Vio también que ya nadie hablaba del Niño Jesús que venía, escondido, en la noche de Navidad a traer regalos a todos los niños. Su lugar había sido ocupado por un vejete bonachón, vestido de rojo, con largas barbas y un saco a la espalda, que gritaba tontamente a todas horas: “Oh, Oh, Oh, Papá Noel está aquí”. Sí, en las calles y dentro de los grandes almacenes estaba él, abrazando a los niños y sacando de su saco regalos que los padres habían comprado y puesto dentro. Se dice que vino de lejos, de Finlandia, montado en un trineo tirado por renos. La gente había ido olvidando a otro viejito, este sí realmente bueno: San Nicolás. De familia rica, por Navidad hacía regalos a los niños pobres diciendo que era el Niño Jesús quien se los enviaba. De todo esto nadie hablaba. Sólo se hablaba de Papá Noel, inventado hace poco más de cien años.
Tan triste como ver a niños abandonados en las calles, era ver como se embobaban, seducidos por las luces y por el brillo de los regalos, de los juguetes y por mil cosas que los padres y madres suelen comprar para regalar con ocasión de la cena de Nochebuena.
Los reclamos publicitarios, muchos de ellos engañosos, se gritan en voz alta, suscitando el deseo de los pequeños que luego corren hacia sus padres pidiéndoles que les compren lo que han visto. El Niño Jesús, travestido de barrendero, se dio cuenta de que aquello que los ángeles cantaron de noche por los campos de Belén “os anuncio una alegría, que lo será también para todo el pueblo porque hoy os ha nacido un Salvador… Gloria a Dios en las alturas y paz en la tierra a la gente de buena voluntad” (Lucas 2, 10-14) ya no significaba nada. El amor había sido sustituido por los objetos y la jovialidad de Dios, que se hizo niño, había desaparecido en nombre del placer de consumir.
Triste, montó en otro rayo celeste, pero antes de volver al cielo, dejó escrita una cartita para los niños y las niñas. La encontraron debajo de las puertas de las casas y, especialmente, de las chabolas de los montes de la ciudad, llamadas favelas. La carta decía así:
Queridos hermanitos y hermanitas:
Si al mirar el portal y ver allí al Niño Jesús, junto a José y María, os llenáis de fe en que Dios se hizo niño, un niño como cualquiera de vosotros, y que es el Dios-hermano que está siempre con nosotros.
Si conseguís ver en los demás niños y niñas, especialmente en los más pobres, la presencia escondida del niño Jesús naciendo dentro de ellos.
Si sois capaces de hacer renacer el niño escondido en vuestros padres y en las otras personas mayores que conocéis, para que surja en ellas el amor, la ternura, el cuidado y la amistad en lugar de muchos regalos.
Si al mirar el pesebre y ver a Jesús pobremente vestido, casi desnudo, os acordáis de tantos niños igualmente mal vestidos, y os duele en el fondo del corazón esta situación inhumana, y quisierais compartir lo que tenéis, y deseáis desde ahora cambiar estas cosas cuando seáis mayores para que no haya nunca más niños y niñas que lloran de hambre y de frío.
Si al descubrir a los tres Reyes Magos que llevan regalos al Niño Jesús pensáis que hasta los reyes, los jefes de estado y otras personas importantes de la humanidad vienen de todas partes del mundo para contemplar la grandeza escondida de ese pequeño Niño que llora sobre unas pajas.
Si al ver en el nacimiento la vaca, el burrito, las ovejas, las cabritinas, los perros, los camellos y el elefante, pensáis que todo el universo está también iluminado por el divino Niño y que todos, estrellas, soles, galaxias, piedras, árboles, peces, animales y nosotros, los seres humanos, formamos la Gran Casa de Dios.
Si miráis al cielo y veis la estrella con su cola luminosa y recordáis que siempre hay una Estrella como la de Belén sobre vosotros, que os acompaña, os ilumina, y os muestra los mejores caminos.
Si aguzáis bien los oídos y escucháis a través de los sentidos interiores una música suave y celestial como la de los ángeles en los campos de Belén, que anunciaban paz en la Tierra.
Sabed entonces que yo, el Niño Jesús, estoy naciendo de nuevo y renovando la Navidad. Estaré siempre cerca, caminando con vosotros, llorando con vosotros y jugando con vosotros, hasta el día en que todos, humanidad y universo, lleguemos a la Casa de Dios, que es Padre y Madre de infinita bondad, para ser juntos eternamente felices como una gran familia reunida.
