Jorge Mario Bergoglio está decidido a beatificar lo antes posible a monseñor Romero. Las últimas palabras del arzobispo salvadoreño –san Romero de América para quienes han mantenido encendidas las brasas de su memoria— todavía ponen los pelos de punta en el pequeño país centroamericano: “Los militares están matando a sus mismos hermanos campesinos. Ningún soldado tiene que obedecer la orden de matar. En nombre de Dios y en nombre de este sufrido pueblo, les suplico, les ruego, les ordeno que cese la represión”. Un certero disparo –atribuido a los escuadrones de la muerte que dirigía el mayor Roberto D’Aubuisson- le destrozó el corazón justo en el momento de alzar el cáliz.
Ya existían indicios bien fundados de que, nada más llegar a la silla de Pedro, el papa Francisco se había interesado por acelerar la causa de beatificación de monseñor Romero, presentada en 1990 por la Iglesia salvadoreña y aceptada por la Congregación para la Causa de los Santos en 1997. Pero ahora ha sido nada más y nada menos que el arzobispo Gerhard Ludwig Müller, prefecto de la Congregación de la Doctrina de la Fe –la antigua Santa Inquisición-, quien ha anunciado que “el proceso va mucho más rápido” por el impulso de Jorge Mario Bergoglio. En una entrevista con el diario italiano La Stampa, el arzobispo Müller dice que “el semáforo verde” para la beatificación de monseñor Romero se encendió durante el papado de Benedicto XVI, pero que ha sido el papa Francisco quien ha dado un gran espaldarazo a la causa: “Considero a Óscar Arnulfo Romero un gran testigo de la fe y de la sed de justicia social. Su testimonio se expresaba en las homilías en las que hablaba de las trágicas condiciones de vida que entonces sufría su pueblo”.
Tras una de aquellas homilías, su voz fue silenciada de un disparo. Todo lo que él temía y denunciaba se cumplió sobradamente. Tras su muerte, llegaron los largos años de la sangrienta guerra civil (1980-1992) y más tarde los gobiernos hegemónicos del derechista partido Arena -fundado precisamente por el mayor D’Aubuisson-. Hasta 2009, ya con la izquierda del presidente Mauricio Funes en el poder, el Gobierno salvadoreño no empezó a honrar su memoria. La misma noche de la victoria, Funes levantó en volandas el recuerdo de quien fue llamado “la voz de los sin voz” diciendo: “Él dijo que la Iglesia tenía una opción preferencial para los pobres”. Unas semanas después, el Gobierno salvadoreño reconoció oficialmente la responsabilidad del Estado en el asesinato del arzobispo, nacido en 1917, y se comprometió ante la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos a iniciar una investigación completa para “identificar, juzgar y sancionar” a los autores.
Nada más ser elegido Papa, Jorge Mario Bergoglio dijo: “Cómo me gustaría una Iglesia pobre y para los pobres”. Hace más de tres décadas, monseñor Romero ya decía: “La misión de la Iglesia es identificarse con los pobres”. Su decisión no hace más que darle coherencia a su papado y esperanza a quienes todavía siguen luchando por la justicia social en América Latina.
