Anuncia el juicio de Dios sobre el curso presente de la historia y hace promesas de liberación de las calamidades.
A partir de la captación de las tendencias, hace previsiones para el futuro. En el fondo afirma: si continúa este tipo de comportamiento de los dirigentes y del pueblo sucederán fatales desgracias. Éstas son consecuencia de las violaciones de leyes sagradas. Y ahí proyectan escenarios dramáticos que tienen una función pedagógica: Hacer entrar a todos en razón y en la observancia de lo que es justo y recto delante de Dios y de la naturaleza.
Leyendo a algunos profetas del Antiguo Testamento y también advertencias de Jesús sobre la situación de los tiempos futuros, casi espontáneamente nos acordamos de nuestros dirigentes y de su comportamiento irresponsable ante los dramas que se están preparando para la Tierra, para la biosfera y para el eventual destino de nuestra civilización.
Hace días en algunas partes del mundo se ha roto la barrera considerada como la línea roja que debería ser respetada a toda costa: no permitir que la presencia de dióxido de carbono en la atmósfera llegase a 400 partes por millón. Y lamentablemente ha llegado. Alcanzado este nivel, difícilmente el clima calentado volverá atrás. Se estabilizará y podrá seguir subiendo. La Tierra quedará calentada unos dos grados centígrados o más. Muchos organismos vivos no conseguirán adaptarse, pues no tienen como minimizar los efectos negativos, y acabarán desapareciendo. La desertificación se acelerará; se perderán cosechas, miles de personas tendrán que abandonar sus lugares a causa del calor insoportable y la imposibilidad de garantizar su alimentación.
En un contexto así leo al profeta Isaías. Vivió en el siglo VIIIº a. C., uno de los periodos más conturbados de la historia. Israel se encontraba exprimida entre dos potencias, Egipto y Asiria, que se disputaban la hegemonía. Tan pronto era invadido por una de estas potencias como por la otra dejando un rastro de devastación y de muerte.
En este contexto dramático Isaías escribe un capítulo entero, el 24º, en una línea de devastación ecológica. Las descripciones se asemejan a lo que puede sucedernos a nosotros si las naciones del mundo no se organizan para parar el calentamiento global, especialmente el abrupto, ya avisado por notables científicos, que podría ocurrir antes de finales del presente siglo. Si efectivamente ocurriera, la especie humana correría gran riesgo de ser diezmada y de que se destruyera gran parte de la biosfera.
Debemos tomar en serio a los profetas. Ellos descifran tendencias en una perspectiva que va más allá del espacio y del tiempo. Por eso también nuestra generación podría estar incluida en sus amenazas. Transcribo partes del capítulo 24 como advertencia y material de meditación.
“Lo mismo sucederá al acreedor y al deudor. La Tierra será totalmente devastada. Ella ha sido profanada por sus habitantes porque trasgredieron las leyes, pasaron por encima de los preceptos, rompieron la alianza eterna. Por esta razón, la maldición ha devorado la Tierra, la culpa es de los que en ella habitan… La Tierra se rompe, tiembla violentamente, es fuertemente sacudida. La Tierra se tambalea como un borracho, se agita como una cabaña… La luna se sonrojará y el sol tendrá vergüenza”.
Jesús, el último y el mayor de todos los profetas advierte: “se levantará nación contra nación y reino contra reino. Habrá hambre y peste y terremotos en diversos lugares” (Mateo 24, 7). “En la Tierra los pueblos serán presa de la angustia ante el rugido del mar y la violencia de las olas. Las gentes desfallecerán de miedo ante la expectativa de lo que sobrevendrá al mundo, porque los astros se conmoverán” (Lucas 22, 25-27).
¿No ocurren escenas semejantes en los tsunamis del sudeste de Asia, en Fukushima en Japón, en los grandes tornados y ciclones como el Katrina y el Sandy en Estados Unidos y en otros lugares del planeta? ¿Las personas no se llenan de pavor al presenciar tal devastación y ver el suelo cubierto de cadáveres? Estas catástrofes no suceden por casualidad, suceden porque hemos roto la alianza sagrada con la Tierra y sus ciclos. Son señales y analogías que nos llaman a la responsabilidad.
Curiosamente, a pesar de todos estos escenarios de destrucción, la palabra profética termina siempre con esperanza. Dice el profeta Isaías: “Dios quitará el velo de tristeza que cubre a todas las naciones. Enjugará las lágrimas de todos los rostros… Aquel día se dirá: este es nuestro Dios, en quien hemos esperado y Él nos salvará” (25,7.9). Y Jesús remata prometiendo: “cuando empiecen a suceder estas cosas, animaos y levantad la cabeza porque se acerca la liberación” (Lucas 21,28).
Después de estas palabras proféticas no cabe comentario; solo el silencio pesaroso y meditativo.
