Deseamos que, a partir de su ejemplo, estos valores tan evangélicos puedan transmitirse al conjunto de la Iglesia.
Esperamos asimismo que esta actitud de pastor facilite el diálogo con el mundo y sus preocupaciones, que sea sensible de manera muy especial a los sufrimientos de tantos millones de personas. Deseamos ardientemente que su actuación evangélica de hoy llegue a disipar pronto las dudas que están levantado en ciertos ambientes sus posiciones doctrinales ante la homofobia y misoginia o su anterior comportamiento ante la dictadura de los militares argentinos.
Nuestra felicitación y acogida de entrada pretende ser al mismo tiempo una palabra de ánimo ante la ingente tarea de renovación tanto hacia dentro como hacia fuera que a él y a toda la Iglesia nos espera. ¡Ojalá que desde la cabeza hasta el más humilde de los y las creyentes podamos volver a ser signos de esperanza en un mundo deshumanizado y desencantado! ¡Ojalá lleguemos a hacer realidad aquel deseo recibido por Francisco de Asís directamente de Jesús: “Francisco, renueva la Iglesia”!

En la nueva era en la que estamos entrando, sería deseable que la Iglesia volviera a recuperar aquella pulsión evangélica que recorrió sus venas en algunos momentos de la historia y que sería hoy de grandísimo apoyo para animar la esperanza en un mundo desencantado y deshumanizado.
Se necesita que el nuevo pontificado tome conciencia, desde el primer momento, de la enorme crisis de credibilidad que atraviesa actualmente al conjunto de la institución eclesial y que está afectando a la plausibilidad de la misma fe cristiana y tenga el coraje de volver al Evangelio. La Iglesia católica está clamando desde todos sus indicadores –dogmáticos, morales, organizativos, pastorales, espirituales– por una renovación profunda. Para ser fiel transmisora de la herencia de Jesús de Nazaret necesita una tal pasada por el Evangelio que la capacite para asumir que el protagonismo está en el pueblo cristiano, que es el sujeto principal –como lo estableció el Vaticano II en la Lumen Gentium–, y no en la jerarquía que es un mero instrumento al servicio del pueblo. Necesita recuperar la eclesiología de comunión que, a pesar de las dificultades, se mantuvo en vigor durante el primer milenio de su historia, y abandonar definitivamente la eclesiología de la desigualdad que, con el absolutismo del Primado de Pedro –y salvo el breve paréntesis del Vaticano II– ha llegado hasta nuestros días. En esta recuperación de la comunión o koinonia, además de asumir la igualitaridad entre hombres y mujeres –como ya dejó establecido la carta a los Gálatas 3,28– tienen un papel decisivo las iglesias locales, la colegialidad, la sinodalidad y toda la diversidad cristiana existente.
Y en relación con la sociedad y con el mundo, de los que la Iglesia es parte, es una buena ocasión para ensayar una presencia significativa y desde dentro. Una presencia fiable y estrecha, interrelacionada con todas las formas y múltiples aspectos de la vida, sin querer exigir sumisión a los propios valores y a la propia moral sino siendo respetuosa y colaboradora con los valores de la universalidad y del cosmopolitismo. Una presencia samaritana, especialmente cercana e inmersa entre los sectores más vulnerables y excluidos por las múltiples formas de pobreza y marginación… Pensamos que es un bonita ocasión para volver a aquella luminosa imagen que soñaba para la Iglesia el Vaticano II: “Los gozos y las esperanzas, las tristezas y las angustias de los hombres de nuestro tiempo, sobre todo de los pobres y de cuantos sufren, son a la vez gozos y esperanzas, tristezas y angustias de los discípulos de Cristo. Nada hay verdaderamente humano que no encuentre hueco en su corazón” (GS 1).
