En el contexto de las primeras noticias, lo que me llamó la atención fue algo a primera vista pequeño e insignificante para los analistas que tratan asuntos del Vaticano. Se trata de la forma como algunos sacerdotes entrevistados, o sacerdotes conductores de programas de televisión, respondieron cuando se les preguntó sobre quién sería el nuevo Papa, saliendo por la tangente. Se referían a la inspiración del Espíritu Santo, o a su voluntad, como si fuera el elemento del que dependería la elección del nuevo romano pontífice. Nada de pensar en personas específicas para responder a las situaciones mundiales desafiantes, nada para despertar una reflexión en la comunidad, nada de hablar de los problemas actuales de la Iglesia que la han llevado a un significativo marasmo, nada de escuchar los clamores de la comunidad católica por la democratización de las estructuras anacrónicas que sostienen a la iglesia institucional.
La formación teológica de estos sacerdotes comunicadores no les permite salir de un discurso trivial y abstracto, ya bien conocido, que continúa recurriendo, como explicación, a fuerzas ocultas, y así, en cierta forma, confirman su propio poder. La continua referencia al Espíritu Santo a partir de un misterioso modelo jerárquico es una forma de camuflar los verdaderos problemas de la Iglesia y una forma de retórica religiosa para no revelar conflictos internos que ha vivido la institución.
La teología del Espíritu Santo continúa siendo para ellos mágica; expresa explicaciones que ya no pueden hablar a los corazones y a las conciencias de muchas personas que valoran el legado del Movimiento de Jesús de Nazaret. Es una teología que sigue provocando la pasividad del pueblo creyente ante las múltiples dominaciones, incluída la manipulación religiosa. Continúan repitiendo fórmulas… como si éstas satisficiesen a la mayoría de la gente.
Me entristece el hecho de comprobar una vez más que los religiosos y algunos laicos que trabajan en los medios de comunicación no perciben que estamos en un mundo en el que los discursos tienen que ser más asertivos, y que tienen que basrse en referencias filosóficas consistentes, más allá de la tradicional escolástica. Un referencial humanista los haría mucho más comprensibles para el común de las personas, incluidos los no católicos y no religiosos. La responsabilidad de los medios de comunicación religiosos es enorme e incluye la importancia de mostrar cómo la historia de la Iglesia depende de las relaciones e interferencias de todas las historias de los países y de las personas individuales.
Ya es tiempo de abandonar ese lenguaje metafísico y abstracto, como si un Dios fuese a ocuparse especialmente de elegir al nuevo Papa, independientemente de los conflictos, desafíos, iniquidades y cualidades humanas. Ya es hora de afrontar un cristianismo que admita el conflicto de las voluntades humanas. Es hora de reconocer que, al final de un proceso electivo, no siempre la elección realizada puede ser considerada como la mejor para el conjunto. Hay que afrontar la historia de la Iglesia como una historia construida por nosotros, todos y todas, y de testimoniar respeto para nosotros mismos/as mostrando la responsabilidad que tenemos todas/os los que nos consideramos miembros de la comunidad católica.
La elección de un nuevo Papa es algo que tiene que ver con el conjunto de las comunidades católicas esparcidas por todo el mundo y no sólo con una élite de edad avanzada, minoritaria y masculina. Por lo tanto, es necesario ir más allá de un discurso justificativo del poder papal, y enfrentarse a los problemas y desafíos reales que estamos viviendo. Sin duda, para esto las dificultades son muchas, y abordarlas requiere nuevas convicciones y un deseo real de promover cambios que favorezcan la convivencia humana.
Me preocupa, una vez más, que no se discuta más abiertamente el hecho de que el gobierno de la Iglesia institucional sea entregado a personas ancianas que, a pesar de sus cualidades y sabiduría, ya no son capaces de hacer frente con vigor y desenvoltura los desafíos que estas funciones demandan. ¿Hasta cuando la gerontocracia masculina papal será como un doble de la imagen de un Dios, blanco, anciano y de barbas blancas? ¿Habría alguna posibilidad de salir de este esquema, o al menos de iniciar una discusión de cara a una futura organización diferente? ¿Habría alguna posibilidad de abrir esta discusión en las comunidades cristianas populares que tienen derecho a la información y a una formación cristiana más ajustada a nuestros tiempos?
Sabemos en qué medida la fuerza de la religión depende de desafíos y comportamientos que son fruto de convicciones capaces de sostener la vida de muchos grupos. Sin embargo, las convicciones religiosas no pueden reducirse a una visión estática de las tradiciones, ni a una visión deliberadamente ingenua de las relaciones humanas. Las convicciones religiosas, igualmente, no pueden reducirse a la ola de las más variadas devociones que se propagan a través de los medios de comunicación. Es más, no podemos seguir tratando al pueblo como ignorante e incapaz de formular preguntas inteligentes y astutas en relación con la Iglesia. Sin embargo, estos sacerdotes comunicadores creen estar tratando con personas pasivas, entre ellas muchos jóvenes que mantienen un culto romántico alrededor de la figura del papa. Los religiosos mantienen esta situación, a menudo cómoda, por ignorancia o avidez de poder. Probar la interferencia divina en decisiones que la Iglesia Católica Jerárquica, prescindiendo de la voluntad de las comunidades cristianas esparcidas por todo el mundo es un ejemplo flagrante de esta situación. Es como si quisieran reafirmar erróneamente que la Iglesia es, en primer lugar, el clero y las autoridades cardenalicias a las cuales habría conferido el poder de elegir un nuevo papa, y que ésa es la voluntad de Dios. A los millones de fieles les corresponde sólo orar para que el Espíritu Santo escoja al mejor, y esperar a que el humo blanco anuncie una vez más el habemus papam.
De manera hábil, por el recurso a fuerzas superiores que dirigirían la historia y, la Iglesia siempre están tratando de hacer que los fieles ignoren la verdadera historia, y que no puedan plantearse su responsabilidad colectiva. Es una lástima que estos formadores de opinión pública estén viviendo todavía en un mundo que es teológicamente, y tal vez incluso históricamente, pre-moderno, donde lo sagrado parece separarse del mundo real y situarse en una esfera superior de poderes a la que sólo unos pocos tienen acceso directo. Es desolador ver cómo la conciencia crítica en relación a sus propias creencias infantiles no haya sido despertada, para su bien personal y en beneficio de la comunidad cristiana. Parece que hasta rescatamos los muchos obscurantismos religiosos de épocas pasadas, mientras que el Evangelio de Jesús, por el contrario, continuamente convoca a la responsabilidad común de unos con los otros.
Conociendo las muchas dificultades afrentadas por el Papa Benedicto XVI durante su corto ministerio papal, las empresas de comunicación católica sólo destacan sus cualidades, su entrega a la Iglesia, su inteligencia teológica, su pensamiento vigoroso, como si quisieran, una vez más, ocultar los límites de su personalidad y de su postura política, no sólo como Pontífice, sino también, como presidente por muchos años de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, el ex Santo Oficio. No permiten que las contradicciones humanas del hombre Joseph Ratzinger aparezcan, y que su intransigencia legalista o el trato castigdor que caracterizaron parcialmente su persona sean recordadas. Hablan desde su elección, principalmente como un papado de transición. No hay duda que es así. Pero, ¿transición hacia dónde?
Me gustaría que la encomiable actitud de renuncia de Benedicto XVI pudiese ser vivida como un momento privilegiado para convidar a las comunidades católicas a repensar sus estructuras de gobierno y los privilegios medievales que esta estructura conlleva. Estos privilegios, tanto del punto de vista económico, como político y socio-cultural, hacen aparecer al papado y al Vaticano como un Estado masculino aparte. Pero un Estado masculino con representación diplomática influyente y servido por miles de mujeres en todo el mundo, en las diferentes instancias de su organización. Este hecho nos invita también a reflexionar sobre el tipo de relaciones sociales de género que este Estado continua manteniendo en la historia social y política actual.
Las estructuras pre-modernas que todavía conserva este poder religioso necesitan ser confrontadas con los anhelos democráticos de nuestros pueblos en la búsqueda de nuevas formas de organización que se correspondan mejor con los tiempos y grupos plurales de hoy. Ess estructuras deben ser confrontadas con las luchas de las mujeres, de las minorías y las mayorías raciales, de personas de diversas orientaciones sexuales y opciones, de pensadores, científicos y trabajadores de las más variadas profesiones. Necesitan ser reelaboradas en la perspectiva de un mayor y más fructífero diálogo con otros credos religiosos y con las sabidurías esparcidas por todo el mundo.
Y, para terminar, quiero volver al Espíritu Santo, a este Viento que sopla en cada una/o de nosotros. Este aliento en nosotros es más grande que nosotros. Nos aproxima y nos hace interdependientes con todos los vivientes. Un soplo de muchas formas, colores, sabores e intensidades. Soplo de compasión y de ternura, soplo de igualdad y de diferencia. Este aliento o soplo no puede ser utilizado para justificar y mantener estructuras privilegiadas de poder y tradiciones antiguas o medievales, como si se tratara de una ley o una norma indiscutible e inmutable.
El viento, el aire, el espíritu sopla donde quiere y nadie debe atreverse a querer ser ni por una sola vez su dueño. El espíritu es la fuerza que nos acerca a unos con otros, es la atracción que permite nos reconozcamos como semejantes y diferentes, como amigas y amigos, y que juntos/as busquemos caminos de convivencia, de paz y de justicia.
Estos caminos del espíritu son los que nos permiten reaccionar ante las fuerzas opresivas que nacen de nuestra propia humanidad, los que nos llevan a denunciar a las fuerzas que impiden la circulación de la savia de la vida, quienes nos llevan a des-cubrir los secretos ocultos de los poderosos. Por tanto, el espíritu se muestra en las acciones de misericordia, en el pan compartido, en el poder compartido, en la cura de las heridas, en la reforma agraria, en el comercio justo, en las armas transformadas en arados, en fin, en la vida en abundancia para todas/os. Éste parece ser el poder del espíritu en nosotros, poder que necesita ser despertado en cada nuevo momento de nuestra historia, y ser despertado en nosotros/as, entre nosotros/as y para nosotros/as.
