–¿Por qué quiso ser monja?
–Es una larga historia. Yo siempre había estudiado en escuela de monjas pero nunca había querido ser monja. Pero de repente, en los años ’60 entré en la universidad para estudiar Filosofía y me encontré con algunas monjas que estaban muy conectadas políticamente y trabajaban con las poblaciones pobres, y empezó a dibujarse para mí como una alternativa de vida. No lo tenía tan claro pero me parecía una vida más libre que la vida de familia y tener pareja.
–Suena raro que haya ido a un convento en busca de libertad…
–Es que nunca me he sentido encerrada. A veces iba a conferencias en la Universidad de San Pablo, que era un foco de lucha antidictadura, y tenía la llave de la casa de las monjas. Mi historia fue de búsqueda de libertad. No soporto que me impidan pensar. Es un derecho pensar diferente. Y ésa ha sido la clave de mi vida, con todos los tropiezos y las contradicciones, porque a veces una no ve claro, y va por un camino y después no es por ahí.
–Realmente suena contradictorio que una mujer busque libertad dentro de una estructura patriarcal, machista y conservadora como la Iglesia Católica. ¿Cómo se entiende?
–Sí, muy contradictorio. Cuando entré en la vida religiosa, fue en 1967, cuando tenía 22 años. Era el momento de los grandes cambios de la Iglesia Católica, justo después del Concilio Vaticano II. Las congregaciones religiosas eran invitadas a aggiornarse. Fue el tiempo en que dejamos las instituciones para vivir entre los pobres. Y ésa ha sido una característica de la vida de las mujeres: salir de las instituciones y vivir en las comunidades populares.
Para mí era una vida llena de desafíos. Desde que era estudiante quería cambiar el mundo. Siempre me pareció una injusticia que hubiera gente tan tan rica y gente tan tan pobre. Pensaba que algo se podía hacer. La vida de las monjas me parecía “un” camino, no “el” camino, que se ajustaba un poco a mi tradición familiar, donde había sido muy protegida y resguardada.
–¿Su familia era muy religiosa?
–No. Vengo de una familia de inmigrantes siriolibaneses, con todos los miedos que los inmigrantes tienen sobre todo con las chicas, que los lleva a no permitirles que salgan solas. Soy hija de la primera generación en Brasil. Luché mucho por ir a la universidad. Mis padres no querían. No por el hecho de no querer que yo estudiara, pero sí porque pensaban que el mundo podía ser peligroso para mí. Esas cosas nunca me entraron. Siempre he sido una rebelde. Siempre he sido una peleona dentro de las estructuras familiares.
–¿No se sintió limitada en el convento con ese espíritu tan rebelde?
–No puedo decir que no hubo cosas que me limitaban. Claro, hubo, como en todas las formas de vida. Pero una característica de mi congregación es que hay que respetar la libertad de las personas. Eso es muy fuerte. Y llega a veces a ser bastante contradictorio.
–¿Cuál es su congregación?
–Hermanas de Nuestro Señor, una congregación de origen francés, sólo de mujeres. Estamos en muchos países, Francia, Bélgica, Holanda, Inglaterra, Vietnam, Hong Kong, y en Latinoamérica, en Brasil y México.
–¿Cómo es el vínculo de las congregaciones de mujeres con el Vaticano?
–Oficialmente hay un vínculo de dependencia en el sentido de que la organización de las congregaciones es aprobada por el Vaticano. Algunas mujeres se han sometido, pero nosotras hemos querido hacer lo que creíamos, que era nuestra interpretación del Evangelio. Siempre hemos peleado incluso con el Vaticano, discutiendo nuestros textos.
–¿La suya es una congregación feminista?
–No. Hay poquísimas monjas feministas en la congregación. No sé si puedo nombrar más de cuatro conmigo.
–¿Cómo empezó a incorporar la conciencia de género?
–Yo pertenecía a la Teología de la Liberación. Siempre trabajé desde la perspectiva de la liberación de los pobres, de los movimientos sociales y políticos. El foco era cambiar el mundo desde los pobres. Yo sabía que existía el feminismo, conocía algo del feminismo norteamericano, brasileño y argentino. Pero en la Teología de la Liberación, sobre todo los varones más eminentes, nos decían que el feminismo era cosa de América del Norte, que el feminismo en Latinoamérica era importado. En tanto militante de la Teología de la Liberación trabajaba en el Instituto de Teología de Recife dando charlas. Siempre, siempre había una sospecha en relación al feminismo.
Hasta que mi camino y el del feminismo se cruzaron de muchas maneras. Una primera manera fue con una mujer de un barrio popular, adonde yo iba a dar clases para los obreros varones sobre la Biblia. Iba una vez por mes a la casa de uno de ellos, donde se reunían ocho a diez obreros. Estudiábamos la Biblia desde una perspectiva social, para fundamentar las huelgas, las reivindicaciones laborales. Yo tenía siempre la lectura de la Biblia que confirmaba los derechos de los trabajadores. La esposa del dueño de casa nunca participaba de las charlas, se quedaba en la cocina, o nos traía café. Hasta que un día fui a visitarla sólo a ella y le pregunté por qué no iba a nuestras charlas. Me dijo que tenía que cuidar a sus niñas, que tenía que hacer café.
Discutimos. Hasta que me dijo, casi enojada: “¿Quieres saber por qué no voy? Porque tú hablas como un hombre”. Yo intenté defenderme. Ella me preguntó: “¿Tú conoces los problemas económicos que nosotras, mujeres de obreros, tenemos?” No. “¿Tú sabes que el viernes es el peor día para nosotros porque el sueldo del obrero sale el sábado y el viernes casi no hay comida?” No, yo le decía. “¿Tú sabes el tipo de trabajo que hacemos para aprovechar el sueldo del esposo?” No. “¿Tú sabes las dificultades sexuales que tenemos con nuestros esposos?” No. “Entiendes por qué no quiero ir a tus charlas, porque no hablas desde nosotras”, me dijo. Esa mujer me abrió los ojos. No me daba cuenta de que abría los ojos para mi condición de mujer en la Iglesia.
–¿Y cómo llegó al feminismo?
–Empecé a leer a las teólogas feministas norteamericanas como Mary Daly. Leí su obra Más allá de Dios Padre. Casi me morí porque ella criticaba casi todo lo que yo creía. Me tomaba las entrañas, empecé a pensar… Leí a Dorote Solle, una alemana, que hablaba de la complicidad de las iglesias cristianas con el nazismo y hacía una relación entre la figura del Dios padre y el general. Cuando recién había entrado al convento yo había vivido de cerca la represión. Enseñaba Filosofía en una escuela pública y eran tiempos de la dictadura militar. Con una de mis amigas que era profesora de Química fuimos detenidas juntas, pero la policía a las dos de la mañana me dejó salir a mí y ella quedó detenida.
Mi amiga pertenecía a un grupo político. La torturaron y finalmente cuando salió, al ver a los torturadores en la calle, terminó enfermándose y murió. Ese artículo sobre el nazismo me abrió las puertas para pensar la dictadura de Brasil y cómo también la religión se mezclaba en todo eso. Las manifestaciones en plazas públicas de Tradición, Familia y Propiedad con rosarios en la mano –no sé si aquí también se hicieron– para defender a la gente del comunismo y apoyar a los militares. También leía a muchas norteamericanas. Eso empezó a iluminarme. La clave fue que un día me encontré con dos feministas en San Pablo, una de ellas me dijo: “Ustedes trabajan teología, ¿pero cuáles son los contenidos?”. Sobre Jesucristo y otras cosas, le dije.
Y me preguntó qué cambio tenía eso en la vida de las mujeres, si yo trabajaba la cuestión de la sexualidad, si había enfrentado el tema del aborto. No, le dije. Y me di cuenta de que no conocía nada de las mujeres. Ese fue el comienzo. Me acerqué a grupos feministas de Recife como SOS cuerpo, democracia y ciudadanía. Decidimos programar tres encuentros entre feministas liberales y teólogas en Recife, San Pablo y Río. Desde ese momento, hice mi opción por el feminismo, alrededor de 1992.
–¿Qué la movilizó a involucrarse con la defensa de la despenalización del aborto, uno de los pecados más graves para la Iglesia Católica?
–Fueron muchas casualidades. Los grandes cambios en mi vida vinieron por azar. Yo apoyaba la causa por saber de mujeres que se habían hecho abortos en mi barrio y también entre las feministas. Las apoyaba como persona pero no tenía muy claras las cosas. Hasta que un día una de las feministas de San Pablo me llama por teléfono a Recife y me dice si podría dar una entrevista a la revista Veja sobre la Iglesia Católica y la formación de curas, y acepté. Hice la entrevista. Al final, el periodista me pregunta en off the record si yo conocía casos de mujeres que se habían hecho abortos. En ese momento justo había ocurrido que una chica que yo conocía del barrio, que tenía ya cinco hijos y se había enamorado de un hombre que trabajaba en una estación de servicio, después de una noche juntos había vuelto a quedar embarazada.
Ella tenía problemas mentales y se había hecho el aborto con misoprostol. Se lo comento. El periodista me dice que en ese caso el aborto no es un pecado. Yo digo: “Claro, no es un pecado”. Entonces, rompiendo el off the record, el periodista publica en la revista la entrevista diciendo que una monja católica está en contra de la hipocresía de la Iglesia y a favor del aborto. Me molestó que lo pusiera.
–¿Era la primera vez que usted se manifestaba públicamente a favor del aborto?
–Sí. Fue un lío total. El tema repercutió en la prensa nacional e internacional. Publicaron una foto mía con un crucifijo y la Virgen para hacer sensacionalismo con el tema. Eso fue en el ’94 o ’95. El obispo de mi diócesis me pidió una retractación pública. Yo no acepté. Le dije que sabía de los dolores de las mujeres. De pronto me vino un gran coraje. Pero me llegó una segunda carta pidiendo otra vez una retractación pública, querían que acusara al periodista de mentiroso. Me negué. En la tercera carta me avisan que iban a enviar un dictamen al Vaticano para abrir un proceso en mi contra. El Vaticano reaccionó y tuve que hacer muchas cosas.
–¿Cuál fue el castigo?
–Primero quisieron sacarme de mi congregación. Pero no lo consiguieron porque las autoridades de mi congregación no apoyaban el aborto, pero me apoyaban a mí. Me propusieron otra alternativa: salir de Brasil y volver a hacer estudios de Teología. Yo ya tenía una licenciatura y un doctorado en Filosofía. Me obligaron a estudiar de nuevo.
En la carta del Vaticano decían que yo era una persona muy ingenua, que no había razonado desde las claves que la Iglesia negaba, y por mi ingenuidad me mandaban a estudiar para aprender de nuevo la doctrina católica. Querían que fuera a Europa. Como ya había estudiado en Bélgica, decidimos que fuera allí. La gente ha sido muy buena conmigo. No tuve ningún problema. Hice otro doctorado allá. La contradicción es ésa: te condenan y después hasta se olvidan que te condenaron y te dan un doctorado en nombre del papa Juan Pablo II. Es casi chistoso.
–¿Con qué argumentos defiende la despenalización del aborto en una estructura como la de la Iglesia Católica, que condena tan duramente esa práctica incluso cuando se trata de un embarazo producto de una violación o corre riesgo la vida de la mujer?
–Ni en caso de fetos anencefálicos lo permite la Iglesia. Es algo espantoso. Hay una forma de hacer teología metafísica que naturaliza la maternidad, que te hace dependiente de un ser suprahistórico. Yo hago la deconstrucción de ese tipo de pensamiento. En mi militancia por la causa de las mujeres, no sólo del aborto, trabajo en la teología feminista. Y ellos no lo aceptan. He tenido un segundo proceso por mi pensamiento también. Tuve que contestar tres páginas de preguntas. Si creo en la Trinidad, si creo que el Papa es infalible, cosas de ese tipo.
Lo que hago es la deconstrucción del discurso religioso justificador de la superioridad masculina. Justificador también de que hay una suprahistoria que nos conduce, deconstruyo qué es la naturaleza. Un obispo incluso justifica que se lleva a término un embarazo de un feto anencefálico porque Dios lo quiere, es de un primitivismo hasta chocante. Una persona más sencilla no dice una tontería como ésa. Mi trabajo es deconstruir eso y también la Biblia como la palabra de Dios. Yo digo: no es la palabra, es una palabra humana, donde se pone una persona a la cual se le atribuye, dependiendo de los textos, una característica. A veces Dios es vengador, a veces bueno, a veces manda matar profetas.
Intento entrar por la línea del humanismo, donde el dolor del otro me toca, me provoca. Dios es más un verbo. Quiero diosar, quiero sentir tu dolor y quiero que sientas mi dolor. No hay una ley de arriba que dice “no hagas abortos” o “no mates”. El hecho es que de muchas maneras nos matamos, incluso afirmando que no mates. La vida social es una vida de vida y muerte. Mi trabajo principal es la deconstrucción del pensamiento, de la filosofía, de la teología que mantiene estas posiciones en contra de las elecciones de las mujeres, en contra de los cuerpos femeninos, en contra de los dolores femeninos. Y esto les molesta mucho, porque dicen que, según Santo Tomas, el alma masculina viene primero, para de nuevo demostrar la superioridad masculina, o sostienen que desde el principio de la unión del óvulo y el espermatozoide está el alma creada por Dios. Y ahora toman la ciencia del ADN para justificar sus posiciones.
–¿Qué contesta a esas argumentaciones?
–Digo cosas muy sencillas: el óvulo es una posibilidad de ser un ser humano, pero para poder ser un ser humano necesitas de sociabilidad, de vida. La Iglesia valora mucho más la vida del feto que la de las mujeres, y entonces mi pregunta es por qué la vida de las mujeres tiene menos valor. Hablan de la inocencia. Y yo digo: ¿Qué es la inocencia? ¿Por qué se habla de la inocencia del feto y no de la inocencia de la mujer que fue violada? No son argumentos que convencen a todas las mujeres católicas, pero si puedo hacer un proceso de formación hay luces que se encienden. A veces me dicen: “El de arriba quiere esto”.
Y yo le digo. “El de aquí, tú, tienes que decidir”. Lo que hago es siempre volver la responsabilidad no para el sacerdote, el obispo, a Dios, a la Virgen. El que decides, digo, eres tú. También hago la reconstrucción de algunas cosas del cristianismo. El cristianismo habla de la reencarnación. Ellos creen que sólo Jesús encarna. No es así. Hay muchas corrientes. Lo divino está en carne humana. También ahí argumento. Y digo a las mujeres que hay que cambiar esa creencia. El divino habita en cada una. Es un poco por ahí que hago la reconstrucción de la teología y las filosofías que mantienen esta postura.
–¿Y en su congregación la apoyan?
–Me apoyan como persona. Hacemos una distinción. Yo estoy muy presente cuando me necesitan, si alguien está enferma, si me piden un texto para un retiro, para unas ancianas, también en mi barrio en Recife, con la gente sencilla, que me viene a decir que hizo una promesa. Yo escucho. Pero también tengo el otro lado, la cara de la intelectual, de de-constructora de las teorías dominadoras de la gente, no sólo de las mujeres: dominan también a los pobres. Me da pena ver la cantidad de iglesias neopentecostales en la televisión que toman la plata de la gente para hacer milagros y sacar el diablo de la gente: eso no es religión, es mercado, negocio.
–¿Por qué voces como la suya son tan aisladas dentro de la Iglesia Católica?
–Es que no nos dan ningún espacio. El Vaticano cerró el Instituto de Teología de Recife, donde yo trabajaba, porque nos decían que éramos comunistas, y no era una institución seria para la formación del clero. Después del cierre y por defender la legalización del aborto no tengo lugar en la institución como maestra con dos títulos doctorales, con más de 30 libros publicados y tantísimos artículos, porque les molesto.
Y también hay otro problema que es muy serio: tampoco tenemos lugar en las parroquias, en los lugares donde está la gente. Hay un convento de monjas de clausura cerca de mi casa, donde me invitaban a que fuera a darles charlas para que les contara cómo estaban las cosas afuera, y el obispo –no el actual, el anterior– las llamó por teléfono y les dijo que yo era una mujer muy peligrosa, que no me invitaran más. Los espacios de reproducción de este pensamiento son absolutamente escasos.
–¿Ha pensado en irse de la Iglesia?
–No, por coherencia con cierto feminismo y con el cristianismo. Porque irse significa también desconectarse de las mujeres, las que más sufren, todas son creyentes. Creo que las feministas no han trabajado suficientemente las cadenas religiosas de los medios populares, que son cadenas que consuelan y oprimen al mismo tiempo. No puedes ser feminista ignorando la pertenencia religiosa de las mujeres; si no son católicas, son de la Asamblea de Dios, o de la Iglesia Universal, o del candomblé o del espiritismo. Y en cada lugar de éstos hay una dominación de los cuerpos femeninos.
La religión es un componente importantísimo en la construcción de la cultura latinoamericana y, a tal punto, que aquí en la Argentina la conexión entre Iglesia y Estado es tan fuerte. En Brasil tenemos oficialmente la separación, pero en la cultura no. A la presidenta Dilma la han presionado, en la cultura, tanto que ya no habla más de su posición a favor de la despenalización del aborto. Se retractó. Hay que cambiar la Iglesia desde adentro.
Su apellido suena a revolución en Latinoamérica. Y ella es revolucionaria. Ivone Gebara es brasileña, monja y feminista. Pertenece a la Congregación de las Hermanas de Nuestra Señora – Cônegas de San Agustín y ha vivido durante décadas en el nordeste de Brasil una vida de “inclusión” en el medio popular, ahora reside en Camaragibe, en la periferia de Recife. Y desde adentro de la Iglesia busca cambiarla. Fundamentalmente se dedica a deconstruir desde una teología feminista el derecho natural, patriarcal y machista que pretende imponer la jerarquía católica. Por sus posiciones, especialmente a favor de la despenalización y legalización del aborto, ha recibido severos castigos impuestos por el Vaticano. Pero Ivone no se calla.
Nació en 1944. Es doctora en Filosofía por la Universidad Católica de Sao Paulo y en Ciencias Religiosas en la Universidad Católica de Lovaina (Bélgica). Enseñó durante 17 años en el Instituto de Teología de Recife, hasta su disolución ordenada por el Vaticano en 1999, como forma de silenciarla. Desde entonces dedica su tiempo principalmente a escribir, dictar cursos y conferencias sobre la hermenéutica feminista, nuevas referencias antropológicas y la ética y los fundamentos filosóficos y teológicos del discurso religioso.
