Andaba siempre con una paloma posada en el hombro derecho. A la puerta de un teatro se extrañó del modo como le miraban las personas bien vestidas. Recordó que, en la Palestina del siglo 1°, su presencia suscitaba curiosidad en algunos y aversión en otros, como los fariseos y saduceos.
Ahora predominaba la indiferencia. En la gran ciudad se sentía un don nadie. Un ser invisible.
Al recoger latas de desecho a la puerta de una facultad ningún estudiante o profesor le miró. «Si estuviera un rato hurgando en los desperdicios las personas manifestarían asco”, pensó. Ahora nada. Ni lo notaban. Consideraban completamente normal que un hombre andrajoso hurgara en la basura.
Gracias a su mirada sobrenatural, capaz de penetrar el alma y la mente de las personas, Jesús sabía que casi todos eran cristianos…
Robaron un auto frente a la facultad. La víctima, una estudiante quirúrgicamente embellecida, le señaló como sospechoso de ser cómplice de los ladrones. La policía, sin pistas acerca de los delincuentes, decidió apresarlo para aplacar la ira de la joven, hija de un empresario.
El comisario le preguntó: -¿Su nombre? –Jesús.
-¿Jesús de quién?
–Del Padre y del Espíritu Santo.
El comisario le dictó al secretario: -Jesús de la Paz, natural del Espíritu Santo. La policía sabe distinguir entre bandidos y gentes de la calle. Tan pronto como la joven y sus padres dejaron la comisaría Jesús fue dejado libre.
Recorrió la avenida, fijándose en los escaparates de los comercios. Todos llenos de arreglos de Navidad. El niño nacido en Belén había sido sustituido por Papá Noel. La fiesta religiosa cedió su lugar al consumismo compulsivo y al intercambio frenético de regalos.
Quedó impresionado por los rápidos chispazos coloridos de los televisores expuestos en las tiendas. La profusión de anuncios. Comentó con el Espíritu Santo: -Si en aquella época hubiera habido televisión habrían retransmitido el sermón del monte como un discurso subversivo y habrían exhibido en el programa Fantástico la multiplicación de los panes. Y si yo lo hubiera permitido, una marca cualquiera de cerveza hubiera deseado patrocinarme…
En su búsqueda de material reciclable Jesús se sorprendió con la cantidad y variedad de basura. ¡Cuántas cosas que no conocía! ¡Cuántas cosas superfluas consume la gente! ¡Cuánta devastación de la naturaleza!
Durmió en un banco de la plaza. Pero se dio cuenta de que había desaparecido su saco repleto de latas y papeles. Posiblemente lo habría llevado otro buscador. Un pobre robando a otro pobre. Resignado, pasó el día rebuscando entre la basura a fin de ganar unas monedas con que garantizar la comida.
Ya tarde en la noche se vio delante de una iglesia, y decidió entrar. Los fieles, al verlo tan harapiento, torcieron la nariz. Jesús prefirió quedar de pie al fondo del templo. Comenzaba la Misa del Gallo. Se fijó en que el cura tenía la cara triste, como si celebrase un ritual mecánico. El sermón le sonó como moralista. No sintió que hubiera allí la alegría de la conmemoración del nacimiento de Dios hecho hombre. Los fieles parecían estar apurados, ansiosos por regresar a sus casas a hartarse con la cena navideña.
Terminada la misa Jesús deambuló por la ciudad. Por las calles había bolsas de basura repletas de embalajes para regalos, cajas de cartón, huesos de pollo y de pavo, cáscaras de huevos… Observó a los moradores de un edificio reunidos en el salón del piso bajo. Comían vorazmente, consumían garrafas de vino espumoso, intercambiaban regalos, besos y abrazos. Allí no había nada, ni un símbolo siquiera, que recordara el significado original de esta fiesta.
Pasó delante de una panadería y el panadero, al ver al rebuscador, le pidió que esperara. Regresó con una bolsa de panes, lonchas de salami y un refresco. –Es -le dijo el hombre- para que celebre la Navidad.
Jesús llegó a una plaza semioscura. Allí estaba una mujer excesivamente maquillada. Buscó un banco y se sentó a comer. La mujer se le acercó y le dijo: -Eh, tío, ¿qué tienes ahí? –Pan, salami y refresco. –Hoy no comí nada, y la noche está mala. Ya hace dos horas que estoy aquí y no vino ni un cliente. Creo que en la noche de Navidad los tipos sienten culpa de estar con una mujer de la calle.
Jesús preparó un bocadillo y se lo dio a la mujer.
–Si no te importa beber de la misma botella…
-¿Acaso tengo asco de algo?, susurró la mujer; si lo tuviera no andaría rondando con mi bolso por la calle.
-¿No tienes familia?
–La tengo en el campo. Dejé aquella miseria para intentar conquistar una vida mejor aquí en la ciudad. Pero como no fui a la escuela tengo que alquilar mi cuerpo.
-¿Esta noche de Navidad no significa nada para ti?
-Caray, no te imaginas lo que lloré hoy allá en la pensión. La gente era pobre pero cada noche de Navidad mi madre mataba un pavo y antes de comer la familia rezaba el rosario y cantaba Noche de Dios. Aquello me hacía muy feliz. No puedo recordarlo sin que las lágrimas me asomen a los ojos, dijo ella, tratando de sacar un pañuelo de su bolsa.
La mujer hizo una pausa para enjugar las lágrimas y preguntó:
-¿Tú crees que si Jesús volviera hoy mejoraría este mundo?
-No sé… ¿Qué opinas tú?
-Creo que nadie le daría importancia si él volviera. La gente sólo quiere saber de fiesta y no de fe. Pero él debería volver. Quién sabe si este mundo enrevesado se podría enmendar.
–A mí no me gustaría que él volviera. Nada se adelantaría. Hace dos mil años que vino y dejó sus enseñanzas. Unos las siguen, otros no. Si el mundo está de esta manera, hasta el punto de que yo tenga que buscar basura y tú alquilar tu cuerpo, la culpa es nuestra, porque no damos importancia a lo que él enseñó. Mira, hoy es la noche de Navidad. ¿Para quién nace Jesús?
-En mi corazón él renace todos los días; me gusta mucho orar, no hago mal a nadie, ayudo al que puedo. Pero ¿sabes una cosa? Me gustaría poder hablar con Jesús, así como estamos hablando nosotros ahora.
-¿Y qué le dirías?
-Bueno, le preguntaría si ser prostituta es pecado. He oído a un cura decir que sí, y oí a otro decir que no. ¿Qué crees tú?
-Creo que Dios es más madre que padre. Y recuerdo que Jesús les dijo un día a los fariseos que las prostitutas entrarían en el cielo antes que ellos.
