Ante a grave situación na que se atopan os países do “Corno de Africa” a ONG “Acción Verapaz” lanza unha campaña de apoio para canalizar a axuda que moita xente do primeiro mundo quere ofrecer a estas poboacións.

Los países del llamado Cuerno de África -Somalia, Kenia, Etiopía, Yibuti y Eritrea- están viviendo una situación de emergencia humanitaria. Los vecinos Sudán, Sudán del Sur y Uganda también se están viendo afectados. 12 millones y medio de personas, según datos de la ONU, precisan ayuda. La peor sequía en 60 años, los conflictos en la región y la enorme subida de los precios de los alimentos derivada de la especulación alimentaria han provocado una durísima crisis.

El 20 de julio Naciones Unidas declaró oficialmente la hambruna en varias regiones del centro y sur de Somalia, siendo la primera vez que se declaraba desde 1992. Para que la ONU declare una situación de hambruna, la tasa de malnutrición entre los niños supera el 30% (en ese momento superaba el 50%); al menos 2 personas de cada 10.000 mueren cada día (el ritmo entonces superaba las 6 personas por día); y la gente no es capaz de acceder a alimentos y servicios básicos.

La magnitud de la hambruna se está expandiendo debido a la lentitud con que se está repartiendo la ayuda y a los problemas de seguridad de la zona. Somalia y Kenia, de momento, se están llevando la peor parte. Miles de personas huyen hacia Kenia y Etiopía desde Somalia. El campo keniano de refugiados de Dadaab recibe a 2.000 personas al día: preparado para 90.000 personas, ahora viven allí 400.000, convirtiéndolo en el campo de refugiados más grande del mundo. La mayor parte de la ayuda internacional se concentra en este campamento. La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) ha advertido de brotes de cólera y sarampión que pueden propagarse rápidamente: sólo en Etiopía, el campamento de Dollo Ado se ha visto azotado por el sarampión (17.500 casos). La OMS ya ha puesto en marcha una campaña de vacunación masiva.Muchos son los Gobiernos, organismos internacionales y ONG que están respondiendo con su ayuda. Aunque se están viendo desbordados. Ante la avalancha de llamadas que estamos recibiendo, en Acción Verapaz hemos decidido lanzar una campaña de recogida de fondos que haremos llegar íntegramente a nuestros colaboradores en el Cuerno de África, con el objetivo de aportar nuestro modesto grano de arena a la mejora de la situación.
