Querido Ellacu: Este año es el veinte aniversario de vuestro martirio y pronto llegará el treinta de Monseñor Romero. Nos toca hablar de ustedes con frecuencia, con especial responsabilidad, y también con algún escrúpulo. Ustedes, los jesuitas, son mártires bien conocidos, pero Julia Elba y Celina no tanto. Y sin embargo ellas son el símbolo de centenares de millones de hombres y mujeres que han muerto y mueren inocente e indefensamente aquí, en el Congo, en Palestina, en Afganistán, sin que nadie les haga mucho caso.
Prácticamente no existen ni en vida ni en muerte para las sociedades de abundancia. Y tampoco la institución Iglesia sabe qué hacer con tantas gentes que han muerto asesinadas. Si difícil es que canonicen a un mártir de la justicia como Monseñor Romero, mucho más lo es que canonicen a esos hombres y mujeres que han vivido y han muerto en pobreza y opresión. Y sin embargo, muchas veces te oí decir que son “los preferidos de Dios”.
Debería escribirte, pues, sobre Julia Elba y Celina, pero conozco poco de ellas. De Julia Elba sé que pasó trabajando toda su vida en las cortas, en la cocina. Y todo ello desde que tenía 10 años. No sé mucho más de ella. Sí me he preguntado “quién es más mártir, Ellacuría o Julia Elba”, y sería terrible que los mártires jesuitas hiciesen olvidar a esas dos mujeres que murieron asesinadas a 50 metros del jardín de rosas. Estos días he escrito que “Ellacuría no vivió ni murió para que el esplendor de su figura opacase el rostro de Julia Elba”. Ellacu, éste es el escrúpulo.
Pero Julia Elba y muchas mujeres salvadoreñas como ella, me perdonarán, quizás hasta se alegrarán, de que en esta carta te hable sobre nuestro Monseñor, pues no tienen celos de una persona muy querida. Y la he titulado: “Monseñor Romero y tú”. Mi intención es ayudar a las nuevas generaciones, a quienes no les sobra orientación cristiana y salvadoreña. Que sepan que una vez hubo un país y una Iglesia extraordinaria: la de Monseñor Romero. Y tú eres un mistagogo de lujo para introducirnos en su persona. Por ello, voy a recordar cómo se llevaron ustedes dos.
La gente sabe que los dos fueron elocuentes profetas y mártires. Pero me gusta recordar otra semejanza importante sobre cómo empezaron. Los dos recibieron una antorcha cristiana y salvadoreña, y sin discernimiento alguno hicieron la opción fundamental de mantenerla ardiendo. Monseñor la recibió de Rutilio Grande la noche que lo mataron. Y muerto Monseñor la retomaste tú. Es cierto que ya habías empezado antes, pero tras su asesinato tu voz se hizo más poderosa y comenzó a sonar más como la de Monseñor. A una señora le oí decir en la UCA: “desde que mataron a Monseñor, en el país nadie ha hablado como el P. Ellacuría”.
Lo que me interesa recordar y recalcar es que en El Salvador existió una tradición magnífica: la entrega y el amor a los pobres, el enfrentamiento con los opresores, la firmeza en el conflicto, la esperanza y la utopía que pasaban de mano en mano. Y en esa tradición resplandecía el Jesús del evangelio y el misterio de su Dios. No podemos dilapidar esa herencia, y debemos hacerla llegar a los jóvenes.
Los comienzos de tu relación con Monseñor Romero no fueron positivos. Al comienzo de los setenta, tú ya eras conocido como peligroso jesuita de izquierdas por tu defensa de la reforma agraria, el apoyo a la huelga de los maestros de ANDES y el análisis del fraude electoral de 1972. Pero con tu libro “Teología Política” de 1973 empezaste a tocar temas más explícitamente cristianos: salvación e historia, el mesianismo de Jesús, la misión de la Iglesia, violencia y política… Y aunque en el país no se hablaba todavía de teología de la liberación -y de cuán peligrosos eran sus defensores- los obispos se asustaron del Ellacuría teólogo que emergía con fuerza. Y le tocó a Monseñor Romero escribir una crítica de siete páginas sobre tu libro. Lo hizo en tono serio y educado, a diferencia de la crítica que llegó de un teólogo de una curia romana, llamado Garofallo. El primer encuentro entre ustedes fue un encontronazo.
Las cosas siguieron su curso. Tú con ciencia y profecía, y a veces con humor e ironía. En una pequeña revista de la UCA escribiste un breve artículo con este título: “un obispo disfrazado de militar y un nuncio disfrazado de diplomático” -los de mi generación sabrán a qué jerarcas te referías. No era tu estilo, pero sí tu convicción.
Así llegó 1976. Monseñor Luis Chávez y González, benemérito y buen amigo, después de 38 años dejaba la responsabilidad de la arquidiócesis. En ECA nos reunimos para escribir un editorial sobre tema tan importante: “quién será el nuevo arzobispo”. Apoyamos a Monseñor Rivera y nos distanciamos críticamente del que sonaba como posible candidato: el obispo Oscar Arnulfo Romero. La elección, por cierto, le salió mal al Vaticano, y más tarde escribirías que “a Monseñor Romero no se le eligió para que fuera a ser lo que fue; se le eligió casi para lo contrario”.
Llegó la conversión de Monseñor y un hondo cambio en tu relación con él. Cuando en marzo de 1977 mataron a Rutilio, tú estabas en España, y desde Madrid el 9 de abril le escribiste una carta, que llegó a mis manos por casualidad muchos años después. La publicamos en Carta a las Iglesias marzo 2006.
“Tengo que expresarle, desde mi modesta condición de cristiano y sacerdote de su arquidiócesis, que me siento orgulloso de su actuación como pastor. Desde este lejano exilio quiero mostrarle mi admiración y respeto, porque he visto en la acción de Vd. el dedo de Dios. No puedo negar que su comportamiento ha superado todas mis expectativas y esto me ha producido una profunda alegría, que quiero comunicársela en este sábado de gloria”.
Ellacu, esta carta es uno de tus textos más bellos. Le hablas a Monseñor con total verdad, y te muestras a ti mismo en facetas desconocidas para quienes sólo te han conocido como profesor y rector. Después del asesinato de Rutilio le agradeces “su valentía y prudencia evangélicas frente a claras cobardías y prudencias mundanas”, el acierto de “oír a todos, pero decidiendo lo que parecía a ojos prudentes lo más arriesgado”. Te referías a la misa única, la supresión de las actividades en los colegios católicos, la promesa de Monseñor de no asistir a ningún acto oficial… Le felicitas: “usted ha hecho Iglesia y ha hecho unidad en la Iglesia”; la mayoría del clero, religiosos y religiosas se aglutinaron alrededor de Monseñor. Y se lo vuelves a desear al final: “si logra mantener la unidad de su presbiterio mediante su máxima fidelidad al evangelio de Jesús, todo será posible”.
En la carta aparece la dialéctica evangélica e ignaciana, recurrente en ti: usted “lo ha logrado no por los caminos del halago o del disimulo sino por el camino del evangelio: siendo fiel a él y siendo valiente con él”. “No ha podido entrar usted con mejor pie a hacer Iglesia”. Yo también escribí que, aunque parecía que todo empezaba muy mal para Monseñor, toda empezaba muy bien. Y firmaste: “Este miembro de la arquidiócesis, que ahora se ve alejado contra toda su voluntad”.
Cuando regresaste en 1978 te pusiste, con entrega y devoción, al servicio de Monseñor. Escribiste para la YSAX, la radio del arzobispado, una larga serie de comentarios a su tercera carta pastoral, “La Iglesia y las organizaciones políticas populares”. Le ayudaste a redactar la parte central sobre las idolatrías en la cuarta carta pastoral, “La Iglesia en la actual situación del país”. En sus últimas semanas estuviste con él en la conferencia de prensa después de la homilía dominical, y te daba la palabra cuando le preguntaban sobre la situación política. Con él estuviste la víspera de su asesinato, después de aquella homilía irrepetible: “En nombre de Dios, y en nombre de este sufrido pueblo cuyos lamentos suben hasta el cielo, les pido, les ruego, les ordeno en nombre de Dios: ¡cese la represión!”. Y en el funeral cargaste el féretro. Se te ve en la foto con Walter Guerra, Jesús Delgado y Juan Spain.
Lo que hiciste por Monseñor no fue simplemente uno más de tus muchos servicios al país. Tampoco lo pensaste como servicio estratégico, dada la inmensa influencia de Monseñor. Monseñor Romero llegó a ser para ti alguien muy especial, distinto a como lo había sido Rahner o Zubiri. Se metió dentro de ti, y tocó tus fibras más hondas. Esa sensación la tuve desde el principio. Y se me quedó grabada para siempre en tu homilía en la misa de funeral que tuvimos en la UCA. En ella dijiste: “Con Monseñor Romero Dios pasó por El Salvador”.
Muchas veces he citado estas palabras, Ellacu. Son muy tuyas por la precisión del lenguaje y por el peso del concepto. Conociéndote, estabas diciendo verdad. Y una verdad teo-logal: por este El Salvador, masacrado y esperanzado,, taimado y valiente, cruel y generoso, se sintió el paso del misterio. El paso de Dios. Por eso Monseñor Romero se convirtió para ti en referente de Dios, y en principio y fundamento de tu teología. Lo voy a recordar brevemente.
Comencemos con la eclesio-logía. El “pueblo de Dios” no era un tema cualquiera, y menos cuando el Vaticano II ya estaba en declive y volvía a resurgir la jerarcología. Sobre él escribiste un artículo sistemático en 1983, pero antes, en 1981, habías escrito “El verdadero pueblo de Dios, según Monseñor Romero”. No tratabas de analizar las ideas de algún importante teólogo, sino de ir al fondo del problema desde la fuente que tenías más a mano y que te parecía la más fructífera.
Cuatro características mencionaste del verdadero pueblo de Dios: 1. La opción preferencial por los pobres, 2. La encarnación histórica de las luchas del pueblo por la justicia y la liberación, 3. La introducción de la levadura cristiana en las luchas por la justicia, 4. La persecución por causa del reino de Dios en la lucha por la justicia. No toda la novedad provenía de Monseñor, pero la más novedosa, por así decirlo, las tres últimas características, de él provenían. Al menos Monseñor Romero te hizo profundizar en ellas.
Monseñor te puso en la pista de “la Iglesia de los pobres”, la que ni siquiera en el Concilio tuvo éxito, a pesar de los deseos de Juan XXIII, el cardenal Lercaro y algunos pocos obispos. Y ciertamente te inspiró para hablar del martirio, realidad fundante para la Iglesia, como la cruz de Jesús. Varias veces citaste unas palabras escandalosas de Monseñor Romero: “Me alegro, hermanos, de que la Iglesia sea perseguida. Es la verdadera Iglesia de Cristo. Sería muy triste que en un país donde se está asesinando tan horrorosamente no hubiese sacerdotes asesinados. Son la señal de una Iglesia encarnada”. Mejor y más profundamente que con muchos conceptos Monseñor define a la Iglesia desde dos relaciones esenciales: con el destino de Cristo y con el destino del pueblo. Alguien, con buena intención, cuestionó una vez que Monseñor Romero corriera tantos riesgos, aun de su vida. Pero tú le contestaste: “eso es lo que tiene que hacer”. Y eso es lo que tú también hiciste con tu vida. La eclesiología no era un conjunto de conceptos prendidos de la realidad con alfileres, sino surgidos de ella.
En cristo-logía coincidiste con Monseñor en muchas cosas. Sólo voy a recordar una, para mí la más decisiva hoy, ciertamente en el tercero mundo, pero también en el primero: ver a Cristo en el pueblo crucificado, considerar a éste como la continuación del siervo de Jahvé. Son hoy los centenares y miles de millones de pobres, hambrientos, oprimidos, dados muerte violentamente, masacrados, inocentes e indefensos, desconocidos en vida y en muerte. Con ellos he comenzado esta carta al recordar a Julia Elba y Celina.
En 1978, en preparación para Puebla, escribiste “El pueblo crucificado. Ensayo de soteriología histórica”, en el que analizas la realidad de los pobres y víctimas como el siervo sufriente de Jahvé. En 1981, en tu segundo exilio de Madrid escribiste “El pueblo crucificado como ‘el’ signo de los tiempos”. En el primer texto recalcas su carácter salvífico. En el segundo, su carácter de revelación.
Monseñor Romero dijo en 1977 en Aguilares a los campesinos perseguidos y asesinados: “Ustedes son el divino Traspasado”. Y en una homilía de 1978 mostró su alegría porque los estudiosos del Antiguo Testamento no sabían decir si el siervo, del que habla Isaías es “todo un pueblo” o es “Cristo que viene a liberarles”.
No sé decir “quién copió a quién” o si ocurrió como con Leibnitz y Newton que descubrieron los fundamentos del cálculo infinitesimal con independencia el uno del otro. Lo que si me parece cierto es que ustedes tuvieron la misma asombrosa intuición de equipar la humanidad sufriente con el crucificado y el siervo de Jahvé. Y por lo que yo sé, sólo ustedes dos. No aparece en encíclicas ni concilios. Tampoco, normalmente, en las teologías. Y muertos ustedes, parece que no hay vigor ni rigor para hablar así de un mundo hoy está evidentemente crucificado.
Y una cosa más. En tu segundo exilio escribiste otro breve texto al que diste mucha importancia: “Por qué muere Jesús y por qué lo matan”. El título es más que muestra de ingenio. Se trata de esclarecer el sentido transcendente de esa muerte y sus causas históricas. En teología se pueden encontrar reflexiones afines, pero no así, ciertamente no con esa radicalidad, en textos oficiales de la Iglesia. Para lo primero hay que tener presente ante todo el designio de Dios. Para lo segundo hay que tener en cuenta la historicidad radical de la vida de Jesús: defensor de aquellos a quienes ofenden los poderosos. Por esa razón Jesús denunció el poder, entró en conflicto con él, perdió y fue crucificado. Esto, tan evidente, suele ser oficialmente silenciado -incluso en Aparecida, un buen documento por otros capítulos.
No lo silenció Monseñor Romero. En la misa funeral de uno de los sacerdotes asesinados dijo lapidariamente: “se mata a quien estorba”. Y los que estorbaban no eran demonios o poderes transcendentes, sino oligarcas, militares, cuerpos de seguridad, escuadrones de la muerte. Así se entiende el “por qué mataron a Jesús”, como tú preguntabas.
Termino con la teo-logía, con Dios y con tu fe. En la primera carta te escribí que tu fe en Dios no pudo ser ingenua. En 1969 hablaste en Madrid de las dudas de fe que Rahner llevaba con elegancia -y entendí que algo semejante decías de ti mismo. Creo que luchaste con Dios como Jacob, en aquellos años recios para la fe. Y a tus 47 años “se te apareció” Monseñor Romero -y uso el término “aparecer”, opthe, conscientemente, para expresar lo que en ello hubo de inesperado, destanteador, cuestionante y bienaventurado. De esto sólo se puede hablar con temor y temblor, pero pienso que en contacto con Monseñor tuviste una experiencia nueva de la realidad última, de Dios. Y creo que se notó en tu hablar sobre Dios.
He escrito que para Jesús Dios es “Padre” en quien se puede descansar, y que el Padre sigue siendo “Dios” quien no deja descansar. En Monseñor Romero, en su compasión hacia los sufrientes, su denuncia para defenderlos, el amor sin componendas viste al Dios que es “Padre” de los pobres. En su conversión, su adentrarse en lo desconocido y no controlable, en su caminar sin apoyos institucionales eclesiásticos, en su mantenerse firme llevase a donde llevase el camino viste al Padre que sigue siendo “Dios”. Y quizás en Monseñor viste también que, a pesar de todo, el compromiso es más real que el nihilismo, el gozo más real que la tristeza, la esperanza más real más que el absurdo. Así interpreto sus sencillas palabras: “Con este pueblo no cuesta ser buen pastor”. En ellas asoma la utopía
Termino. No era la primera vez que te encontrabas con alguien que iba a influir importantemente en tu vida, como bien lo analiza Rodolfo Cardenal. Sin embargo, encontrarte con monseñor Romero significó algo distinto. Y eso distinto radica en que te encontraste con la profecía, la entrega, la bondad de Monseñor, pero sobre todo con su fe, lo que configura toda la persona. Por eso nunca te consideraste “colega” de Monseñor. Nunca te escuché, siendo tú de talante crítico, una crítica a Monseñor. Y en tu nombre y en el de la UCA, dijiste que “Monseñor Romero ya se nos había adelantado”. E insististe: “No hay duda de quién era el maestro y de quién era el auxiliar, de quién era el pastor que marca las directrices y de quién era el ejecutor, de quién era el profeta que desentrañaba el misterio y de quién era el seguidor, de quién era el animador y de quién era el animado, de quién era la voz y de quién era el eco”. Lo decías con total sinceridad.
“Monseñor Romero, un enviado de Dios para salvar a su pueblo”, escribiste. Y Monseñor te habló de lo que en Dios hay de “más acá”. Pero también te habló de lo que en Dios hay de inefable, de misterio bienaventurado, de lo que en Dios hay de “más allá”. “Ni el hombre ni la historia se bastan a sí mismos. Por eso [Monseñor] no dejaba de llamar a la transcendencia. En casi todas sus homilías salía este tema: la palabra de Dios, la acción de Dios rompiendo los límites de lo humano”. Monseñor Romero vino a ser como el rostro de Dios en nuestro mundo.
Ellacu, termino esta carta con las palabras con las que tú terminaste tu último escrito de teología. Son para los que no te conocieron, para todos los que te conocimos y especialmente para que ayuden a que la Iglesia retome su rumbo:
“La negación profética de una Iglesia como el cielo viejo de una civilización de la riqueza y del imperio y la afirmación utópica de una Iglesia como el cielo nuevo de una civilización de la pobreza es un reclamo irrecusable de los signos de los tiempos y de la dinámica soteriológica de la fe cristiana historizada en hombres nuevos, que siguen anunciando firmemente, aunque siempre a oscuras, un futuro siempre mayor, porque más allá de los sucesivos futuros históricos se avizora el Dios salvador, el Dios liberador”.
