El Salvador clama justicia tras 33 años del asesinato del obispo Óscar Romero

Mauricio Funes, Presidente de El Salvador, aseguró que continúa junto al pueblo de ese país centroamericano «en la espera de la verdad» sobre el asesinato del arzobispo Óscar Arnulfo Romero, cometido el 24 de marzo de 1980.

«En el caso del asesinato de monseñor Romero, aún seguimos esperando que la justicia llegue al fondo del caso y revele esa verdad, que no sólo se debe a los familiares de monseñor, sino a la iglesia católica y a todo el pueblo salvadoreño», dijo Funes, durante el programa sabatino Conversando con el Presidente, que transmiten en Radio Nacional de El Salvador.

Desde que inició su mandato en junio de 2009, Funes consideró a Romero como «el guía espiritual de la nación». Asimismo, pidió perdón en nombre del Estado salvadoreño a la familia de Romero, a la iglesia católica y al país.

El arzobispo Romero fue ultimado de un disparo en el pecho, cuando oficiaba misa en la capilla de un hospital para enfermos de cáncer de San Salvador, el 24 de marzo de 1980, cuando estaba por estallar la guerra civil que se prolongó hasta 1992. El sacerdote fue reconocido por denunciar la represión militar y la injusticia social.

En 1993 una Comisión de «La Verdad» creada por la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) culpó como responsable intelectual del asesinato al mayor del ejército Roberto D´Aubuisson, fundador de la Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena, Derecha), quien murió de cáncer en febrero de 1992.

Este domingo también se celebrará el Día Internacional del Derecho a la Verdad de las Víctimas de Graves Violaciones de los Derechos Humanos, declarado por la ONU en 2010 en honor al prelado, que se caracterizó por defender a los pobres y denunciar las injusticias.

La conmemoración oficial de la Iglesia católica y de la Fundación Monseñor Romero se llevó a cabo por anticipado el sábado anterior 16 de marzo para no interferir con el Domingo de Ramos, que marca el inicio de la Semana Santa, según explicaron los organizadores.
