Soy de la era del papel, y nunca imaginé que esto de las redes pudiera tener tanto poder de difusión. Ello me anima a escribir ahora a cuantos comentaron mi escrito anterior sobre el papa Francisco. A niveles personales sólo he contestado a tres (un hermano jesuita y dos laicos latinoamericanos) que se mostraron más recelosos o críticos. A los entusiasmados, no quisiera hacerles ahora de aguafiestas: simplemente recordar que también las fiestas necesitan agua, para no agostarse.
1.- A toda gran esperanza le es intrínseco el peligro de que “más dura sea la caída”. Atención pues. Los gestos iniciales del papa Francisco han sido muy alentadores, pero hay que tener en cuenta dos cosas: han sido sólo de formas, aunque fueron formas con simbología muy adecuada. Y, si se los mira serenamente, veremos que han sido muy elementales: le comentaba ayer a una amiga que es como si nos entusiasmáramos porque una persona de cuarenta años, que nunca hablaba, de pronto dice claramente papá y mamá; será esperanzador pero ¡son cosas tan de cajón!. (Ello es señal más bien de hasta qué punto estábamos habituados todos nosotros a cosas absurdas).
2.- Con el tiempo habrá que ir pasando de las formas al fondo. Y ahí, el hermano Francisco puede tropezar, como mínimo, con cuatro grandes dificultades:
a) la curia romana que resistirá hasta el máximo y tiene enorme poder. No sé si la curia es un nudo de víboras como algunos insinúan. No creo que sean malas personas sino más bien víctimas de una estructura que fomenta la intriga y el carrerismo como insinuó el cardenal Martini. Sobre el poder de la curia me comentaba ayer otro amigo que los papas se encuentran en ella como el ciudadano vulgar en sus conocimientos de informática que, de repente, se ve ante un ordenador descomunal que no conoce: si todo el equipo informático (la curia) decide no colaborar (“no sé”, “esto no es de mi competencia”…), el pobre ciudadano se desesperará impotente, como un nuevo Luciani, y como nos ha pasado alguna vez a nosotros con esto de las computadoras.
b) Hay que tener en cuenta que la crisis de la Iglesia no radica sólo en los estamentos institucionales (los llamados “jerárquicos”), sino en infinidad de movimientos de la base eclesial, de corte fundamentalista, que parecen querer servir a Dios como a ellos les gusta y no como Dios quiere ser servido.
c) Hay que contar con que todos los poderes de la tierra, por mucho que asistan a la consagración del obispo de Roma, no desean un mundo más fraterno sino la salvaguarda de lo que ellos consideran sus “intereses vitales”; y que, en defensa de ellos, siempre acaban uniéndose Herodes y Pilatos (o Merkeles y Putins o pongan los nombres que ustedes quieran).
Y finalmente d) se dice, aunque yo no la conozco, que Francisco es conservador en su teología. Habrá que esperar a ver si eso significa algo, pero puede ser bueno tenerlo en cuenta. A mí personalmente, no me ha satisfecho en sus primeras palabras la repetición en hablar “del diablo”. No porque yo niegue su existencia -que tampoco sé tanto como algunos progres seguros- pero sí porque tengo problemas sobre ella y sobre el significado correcto del lenguaje bíblico cuando habla del Enemigo (Satán) o del Separador (dia-bal.lon). La existencia de un ser que junte a la vez, la perfección ontológica de lo personal y la consistencia absoluta del mal, que es la negación misma del ser, no me parece fácil de entender. Prefiero, por eso, el lenguaje neotestamentario del “misterio de iniquidad” (2 Tes 2,7) que pone de relieve esa verdad del mal como misterio que trasciende nuestros niveles de existencia. Hablar así me habría resultado más razonable. Pues, en mi opinión, la enseñanza bíblica sobre el diablo no es “que existe” sino que, si existe, está vencido (lo cual ya no es una verdad meramente de información, sino “por causa de nuestra salud”, como enseña el Vaticano II al hablar de la verdad de la Biblia).
Pero esto es sólo un ejemplo. Lo importante es cobrar conciencia de que las cuestiones de fondo son muy serias y no se arreglan con gestos, por imprescindibles y bonitos que estos sean. Ello nos exige, a la vez, serenidad, esperanza y colaboración pero ningún entusiasmo ciego. Ahora que se acerca semana santa, puede ser oportuno evocar que las multitudes humanas somos así: gritamos un día: hosanna y bendito el que viene en Nombre del Señor, para cinco días después gritar: crucifícale. Jesús nunca fue un optimista a pesar de que traía el más bello de los anuncios (la paternidad de Dios y reinado de la fraternidad); pero, aun sabiendo que somos malos, Jesús se atrevía a esperar que imitemos la bondad del padre Celestial. Ni los partidos de futbol se ganan gritando simplemente “este partido lo vamos a ganar”, sino encontrando la manera de abrir el cerrojo rival. Pues bien, parodiando a Jesús: “aquí hay mucho más que un partido”.
3.- A las dificultades enumerada habrá que añadir la oposición de un sector de la opinión mediática que intentará revolver puntos oscuros. Tras la elección de Bergoglio, en cuanto pude constatar que los media sabían ya de todo, me pareció que lo más evangélico por nuestra parte era no querer ocultar nada (porque eso acaba haciéndonos más daño), sino poner en práctica las sabias palabras de Pablo VI que me recuerda Julín (un cura amigo dominicano): “aceptamos con humildad y reflexión crítica y admitimos lo que se señala con justicia. Roma no necesita ponerse a la defensiva cerrando los oídos a observaciones que proceden de fuentes respetadas, y menos aún cuando esas fuentes son amigas y hermanas”.
En este contexto, las declaraciones de Orlando Yorio, hermano del jesuita torturado y expulsado, me parecen muy dignas de respeto: sólo piden conocer del todo la verdad. Y a ello tienen pleno derecho porque los familiares de una víctima guardan algún deber respecto a ella que es algo distinto del deber de perdonar. (Jalics, en cambio, sigue vivo y plenamente reconciliado y, según he leído, ha modificado algo lo que explicaba en el capítulo V de su libro -Ejercicios de contemplación- aunque sin citar ningún nombre).
No necesitamos ningún encubrimiento porque sabemos bien que la Iglesia se apoya sobre una “roca”, pero una roca agrietada: que negó a Cristo cobardemente, pero a quien Jesús logró cambiar. Pedro fue muy querido en la Iglesia primera que conocía su debilidad. Si hubiera algún pasado que lamentar, entonces estaríamos poniendo en práctica lo que el mismo Francisco nos pidió antes de dar su bendición: que le perdonáremos nosotros a él. Y cabría imaginar una nueva escena evangélica donde los hodiernos Vicarios de Cristo que son los pobres de la tierra le preguntan al sucesor de Pedro “¿nos amas más que éstos?” (más que todos nosotros). Por tres veces y para poder decirle después: “guíanos”. Y quizás añadiendo una nueva pregunta: “¿nos amas más que a éstos?” Y en “éstos” segundos están todos los poderes económicos de la tierra (banqueros, ejecutivos de multinacionales, millonarios, narcotraficantes, magnates del petróleo …) y otros que quizás asistan a misa y den un pequeño pellizco limosnero a la Iglesia, pero han de ir aprendiendo lo que significa una Iglesia de los pobres y un papa para los pobres, como dijera nítidamente el obispo Bossuet en su impresionante sermón “sobre la eminente dignidad de los pobres en la Iglesia”.
En resumen otra vez: serenidad esperanzada y colaboración. Una colaboración que evite convertir el entusiasmo actual en un gallinero de reivindicaciones insolidarias, donde cada cual va sólo a la suya, y que es una de las razones por las que fracasan tantas reformas posibles.
Vosotros lo veréis. Yo, seguramente, ya no tanto.
