La miniserie de dos capítulos de una hora ”Descalzo sobre la Tierra Roja”, basada en el libro homónimo del periodista catalán Francesc (Paco) Escribano, es una co-producción de TVE (educativa de España), de TV3 de Catalunya, de la productora Minoría Absoluta, de la TV Brasil y de la productora paulista Raíz Producciones Cinematográficas. Descalzos sobre la Tierra Roja se estrenó en TV3 en marzo y está programado para ser exhibida en TV Brasil, durante el segundo semestre.
Aborda la vida de don Pedro Casaldáliga, desde su llegada a Brasil hasta su visita ad Limina al Vaticano, cuando se presentó al Papa João Paulo II y al cardenal Joseph Ratzinger, entonces al frente de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, donde debía explicar su acción a favor de los pobres teológica y los oprimidos.
La película, una bellísimo y bien cuidada producción, contó con la participación de más de mil extras de pueblos y ciudades de Luciara y São Félix do Araguaia, lugares donde se construyeron verdaderas ciudades escenográficas, representando cómo eran estos lugares en los años 1970.
Dirigida por Oriol Ferrer, con Eduardo Fernández, galardonado actor catalán, en el papel de Casaldáliga, contó con un elenco de grandes actores españoles y brasileños.
Filmada como una especie de western teológico, retrata con gran fuerza y sensibilidad la violencia y tensión existentes en los conflictos entre propietarios de tierras, los invasores de tierras indígenas, colonos y la acción pastoral de la Prelatura de São Félix, con Don Pedro al frente, quien siempre estuvo al lado de los desposeídos.
Según la descripción que aparece en la Página Web de Minoría Absoluta, la serie combina acción y misticismo “en el escenario exuberante de Mato Grosso, en contraste con un paisaje humano y social impactante”. La historia de Pedro Casaldáliga se desarrolla “alrededor de los valores universales”, en el contexto de la teoría filosófica y teológica de la liberación y la situación geopolítica de los años 1970, bajo la dictadura brasileña.
El periodista y productor ejecutivo Francesc Escribano destaca que la producción se convirtió en “su corazón” para contar “una historia notable de un catalán universal”.
