La médico y monja benedictina de origen catalán, Teresa Forcades, fue vetada de participar en el Congreso de Educación Religiosa organizado por la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, California, pero de todas maneras visitó la ciudad y fue entrevistada por Rubén Luengas en su programa radial.

Teresa Forcades es una mujer excepcional: posee dos doctorados, uno en Salud Pública, en su calidad de médico, y otra en Teología, con estudios en España y Estados Unidos. Además es monja benedictina, defensora de la autonomía de Cataluña, anti-capitalista, enemiga declarada de las multi-nacionales farmacéuticas y autora de varios libros traducidos y distribuidos a nivel global.

Su última obra, «La teología feminista en la historia» (2011), aboga por una nueva posición de la mujer dentro de la fe cristiana, más empoderada y liberal, en el marco de una Iglesia Católica que ella misma considera «misógina», como declara en una entrevista al periódico británico The Guardian.

La religiosa era una de las expositoras principales en el Congreso de Educación Religiosa, que todos los años reúne a más de 40,000 personas en el centro de convenciones de Anaheim, en el área metropolitana de Los Angeles, California. Sin embargo, su participación fue cancelada a pocas semanas del evento.

«Hablamos con ella y decidimos que su tópico, que es muy bueno, pudiera ser malinterpretado, ya que ella proviene del mundo teológico (…) Puede estar atrapada en una situación donde la gente común no pueda entender a alguien con un fuerte bagaje teológico», indicó a Entre Noticias la encargada del Congreso, Edith Prendergast.

En un contexto de fuertes corrientes conservadoras en Estados Unidos, donde en varios estados se ha tratado de quitar financiamiento a Planned Parenthood o evitar que hospitales que pertenecen a la Iglesia otorguen tratamientos anti-conceptivos a sus pacientes, la figura de Teresa Forcades causa un fuerte rechazo en el segmento más dogmático del catolicismo.
