Pero un buen día el poste se rompió y sobrevino la catástrofe: toda la tribu quedó presa de la angustia; durante algún tiempo sus miembros caminaron sin rumbo y, finalmente, se sentaron en el suelo y se dejaron morir. Y es que su poste sagrado era su modo de orientarse en la vida, su sistema de valores, el sentido de su existencia. Roto este, se abrió paso el caos, el desconcierto y, en cierto modo, la nada.
Desde su llegada al pontificado, analistas y teólogos tratan de identificar el poste sagrado del papa Francisco. Hay bastante consenso en que se ha encontrado con un mundo en el que escasean los postes sagrados, tanto los religiosos como los profanos. Aunque suene a tópico, conviene repetirlo: existe una preocupante crisis de valores, no sabemos en qué pozo beber ni qué melodía entonar, fallan los sistemas de orientación moral, cultural, política y económica. Nuestras sociedades, nuestras tribus, andan tan a la deriva como los achilpa. El poste sagrado religioso se ha derrumbado antes de que alumbremos postes sagrados profanos, es decir, algo así como virtudes públicas vinculantes. A. Camus nos legó una frase inolvidable: “Lo urgente es curar”. Existe lo que no puede esperar, lo intolerable. De ahí la importancia de un poste sagrado que conduzca a la acción necesaria.
Por lo que al papa Francisco se refiere, no puede haber duda: su principal poste sagrado es su fe cristiana. Se le ve feliz con ella, da la impresión de tenerla profundamente interiorizada; es una fe con sabor a confianza sencilla y filial, que irradia convencimiento firme. Pero a los papas la fe se les supone, como a los soldados el valor. No nos detendremos, pues, en este poste. Y, al buscar otro, nos topamos, creo, con el de la misericordia y la compasión. En varias ocasiones ha repetido el Papa: “Primero la misericordia, no juzgar”. Y creo que fue en el imponente escenario de la plaza de san Pedro donde elogió el libro del cardenal W. Kasper, La misericordia. Profundamente consciente de la vulnerabilidad de la condición humana, de nuestra indigencia —todos somos “indigentes”, dejó escrito Platón—, el Papa se inclina por la comprensión y la benevolencia: “¿Quién soy yo para juzgar a un gay?”. Ha sido, tal vez, su frase más afortunada. Testigos del momento aseguran que la pronunció en voz baja, mirando al suelo y algo ensimismado. Personalmente, me ha traído a la memoria unas palabras, muy logradas, de Ortega y Gasset: “A ser juez de las cosas, voy prefiriendo ser su amante”. Ortega se inscribe así en una larga tradición de filósofos, más propensos a la compasión que al enjuiciamiento rápido y condenatorio. Expresión acertada de esta tradición es una memorable conversación entre J. Habermas y H. Marcuse. Próximo este último a su muerte, espetó a su visitante y amigo Habermas: “Ya sé cuál es el fundamento último de la ética: la compasión”. Se comprende que Habermas recuerde una y otra vez aquel último encuentro con su amigo.
Pero al papa Francisco no es necesario buscarle precedentes filosóficos. Él tiene otra autoridad en su mente: la de Jesús de Nazaret, que sentía compasión por la multitud, por los que Flavio Josefo llamaría después “los desharrapados del Mediterráneo”. Los italianos llaman a Francisco “párroco del mundo”. No cabe duda de que se está manifestando como párroco de nuestra aldea global, pero sobre todo de los que ocupan las chabolas de la aldea, de los menos afortunados, de los marginados, de los más pobres y olvidados de la tierra; viene criticando, con libertad y coherencia, “la globalización de la indiferencia” frente al sufrimiento y el hambre. Y fustiga el hedonismo de los saciados; sabe que media humanidad, cristiana por más señas, derrochamos lo que la otra media necesita para sobrevivir. De ahí que haya comenzado por intentar corregir los desafueros económicos de su nueva casa, de la curia vaticana. No piensa tolerar tamaño contrasentido. Entre paréntesis: creo recordar que también el malogrado papa Luciani tenía parecidos propósitos de reforma de la curia pontificia, pero no dispuso de tiempo para llevarlos a cabo; es de esperar que Francisco tenga más suerte. “Central de consejo” llamaba el filósofo marxista E. Bloch a la Iglesia. Pero ¿qué consejos puede ofrecer si se convierte en una central de negocios sucios, de intrigas palaciegas, de lucha por el poder y de tolerancia frente a lo más abyecto que se nos ha ocurrido a los humanos, la pederastia? Se comprende bien que Francisco quiera una Iglesia austera, solidaria, ejemplar, justa, humilde, no burocratizada, eficaz, transparente. Son adjetivos que él viene empleando. Y tampoco sorprende que ruegue a los obispos que no tengan “psicología de príncipes”. Él no parece tenerla. Es conocida su aversión, muy ignaciana, a lo superfluo y a todo boato innecesario.
Pero ¿qué sucede con las otras deseadas reformas, entre las que siempre se menciona la abolición del celibato obligatorio de los sacerdotes y el acceso de la mujer al sacerdocio? Desgraciadamente tendrán que esperar. Ambas son pastoralmente necesarias y teológicamente legítimas; pero su introducción supondría cambios tan profundos en la estructura de la Iglesia que ningún papa querrá cargar en solitario con la agobiante responsabilidad de protagonizarlos. Solo un concilio, o un gran sínodo, podría asumir semejante responsabilidad. El papa Francisco ya ha dejado claro que en estos temas se atiene a lo de siempre, a la tradición de la Iglesia. Habrá, pues, salvo sorpresas parecidas a las que nos dio Juan XXIII, que seguir esperando. Pero este Papa entiende de sorpresas: no es pequeña la que nos ha dado al hacer suya la encíclica Lumen fidei (La luz de la fe) redactada casi íntegramente por su predecesor Benedicto XVI. Es difícil no emocionarse cuando, en la introducción, Francisco escribe: “Se lo agradezco de corazón (a Benedicto XVI) y, en la fraternidad de Cristo, asumo su precioso trabajo, añadiendo al texto algunas aportaciones”. Todo un ejemplo de humildad y sencillez, de grandeza espiritual y humana.
Los que temían un choque de papas en el Vaticano pueden, pues, respirar tranquilos. Benedicto XVI elogia el “carisma” de su sucesor y este saborea el privilegio de tener en casa a Ratzinger, “el abuelo sabio”. Tal vez sea este el momento de recordar al papa Francisco que no lejos de Roma, en la hermosa ciudad de Tubinga que a lo mejor conoce, vive otro anciano sabio, compañero del anterior, que, desde unas tristes navidades, las del año l979, espera pacientemente ser rehabilitado como teólogo católico. Méritos no le faltan: Hans Küng ha sido, continúa siendo, un excelente valedor de la causa cristiana en todo el mundo. Por otra parte, Juan Pablo II, el Papa que le retiró su condición de teólogo católico, conocerá próximamente la gloria de los altares y, desde esas cumbres, seguro que agradecerá al Papa actual que concluya cristianamente esta historia. Una imagen del papa Francisco, flanqueado por los dos ancianos sabios, prestaría un notable servicio a la fe cristiana y a la teología católica. ¡A lo mejor la vemos!
Finalmente, y en conexión con lo anterior: ¿será la teología otro poste sagrado para el papa Francisco? Su viaje a Brasil ha levantado un impresionante “alboroto místico” (R. Otto) que debería ir seguido de arduas tareas de fundamentación teológica. El cristianismo no ha terminado de ser pensado. Al gran teólogo E. Schillebeeckx le preocupaba que los centros de reflexión de ayer se hayan convertido en actuales lugares de meditación. La reflexión teológica no puede ser algo “estacional” en la Iglesia, algo que solo exista si tenemos un Papa teólogo. La teología no puede ser una variable, sino una constante en el devenir del cristianismo. Pero seguro que el papa Francisco sabrá mimar también este imprescindible poste sagrado.
