«El movimiento eclesial teológico de América Latina, conocido como “teología de la liberación”, que después del Vaticano II encontró eco en todo el mundo, debe ser considerado, según mi parecer, entre las corrientes más significativas de la teología católica del siglo XX». Quien consagra la teología de la liberación con esta halagadora y perentoria evaluación histórica no es algún representante sudamericano de las estaciones eclesiales del pasado. El “certificado· de validez llega directamente del arzobispo Gerhard Ludwig Müller, actual Prefecto del mismo dicasterio vaticano -la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe (CdF)- que durante los años ochenta, siguiendo el impulso del Papa polaco y bajo la guía del entonces cardenal Ratzinger, intervino con dos instrucciones para indicar las desviaciones pastorales y doctrinales que también incluían los caminos que habían tomado las teologías latinoamericanas.

La evaluación sobre la teología de la liberación no es una declaración que se le escapó accidentalmente al actual custodio de la ortodoxia católica. El mismo juicio, meditado, aparece en las densas páginas del volumen del que proviene la cita: una antología de ensayos escrita a cuatro manos, impresa en Alemania en 2004, y que ahora está por se publicada en Italia con el título “De la parte de los pobres, Teología de la liberación, Teología de la Iglesia” (Ediciones Messaggero, Padua, Emi).

El libro hoy irrumpe casi como un acto para clausurar las guerras teológicas del pasado y los residuos bélicos que de tanto en tanto brillan para esparcir alarmas que representan ya intereses ya pretextos. El volumen lleva las firmas del actual responsable del ex Santo Oficio y del teólogo peruano Gustavo Gutiérrez, padre de la teología de la liberación e inventor de la misma fórmula usada para definir esa corriente teológica, cuyas obras fueron sometidas a exámenes rigurosos durante bastante tiempo por parte de la CdF en su larga estación ratzingeriana, aunque nunca se le haya atribuido ninguna condena.

El libro representa el resultado de un largo camino común. Müller nunca ha ocultado su cercanía a Gustavo Gutiérrez, a quien conoció en 1998 en Lima durante el curso de un seminario de estudios. En 2008, durante la ceremonia para el doctorado honoris causa concedido al teólogo Müller por la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, el entonces obispo de Ratisbona definió como absolutamente ortodoxa la teología de su maestro y amigo peruano. En los meses anteriores al nombramiento de Müller como guía del Dicasterio doctrinal, justamente su relación Gutiérrez fue evocada por algunos como prueba de la no idoneidad del obispo teólogo  alemán para el puesto que ocupó (durante 24 años) el entonces cardenal Ratzinger.

En los esnayos de la antología, los dos autores-amigos se complementan recíprocamente. Según Müller, los méritos de la teología de la liberación van más allá del ámbito del catolicismo latinoamericano. El Prefecto indica en que la teología de la liberación ha expresado en el contexto real de la América Latina de las últimas décadas la orientación hacia Jesucristo redentor y liberador que marca cualquier teología auténticamente cristiana, justamente a partir de la insistente predilección evangélica por los pobres. «En este continente», reconoce Müller «la pobreza oprime a los niños, a los ancianos y a los enfermos», e induce a muchos a «considerar la muerte como una escapatoria». Desde sus primeras manifestaciones, la teología de la liberación “obligaba” a las teologías de otras partes a no crear abstracciones sobre las condiciones reales de la vida de los pueblos o de los individuos. Y reconocía en los pobres la «carne misma de Cristo», como ahora repite Papa Francisco.

Justamente con la llegada del primer Papa latinoamericano surge con mayor fuerza la oportunidad para considerar esos años y esas experiencias sin los condicionamientos de los furores y las polémicas de entonces. Aún alejándose de los ritualismos del “mea culpa” postizos o de las “rehabilitaciones” aparentes, hoy es mucho más fácil reconocer que ciertas vehementes movilizaciones de algunos sectores eclesiales en contra de la teología de la liberación estaban motivadas por ciertas preferencias de orientación política más que por el deseo de custodiar y afirmar la fe de los apóstoles. Los que pagaron la factura fueron los teólogos peruanos y los pastores que estaban completamente sumergidos en la fe evangélica del propio pueblo, que acabaron “triturados” o en la sombra más absoluta. Durante un largo periodo, la hostilidad demostrada hacia la teología de la liberación fue un factor precioso para favorecer brillantes carreras eclesiásticas.

En uno de los textos, Müller (que en una entrevista del 27 de diciembre de 2012 había expresado la hipótesis  del escenario de un Papa latinoamericano después de Ratzinger) describe sin medias tintas los factores político-religiosos y geopolíticos que condicionaron ciertas “cruzadas” en contra de la teología de la liberación: «Con el sentimiento triunfalista de un capitalismo, que probablemente se consideraba definitivamente victorioso», refiere el Prefecto del dicasterio doctrinal vaticano, «se mezcló también la satisfacción de haber cancelado de esta manera cualquier fundmento o justificación de la teología de la liberación. Se creía que el juego era muy sencillo con ella, arrojándola al mismo conjunto de la violencia revolucionaria y del terrorismo de los grupos marxistas». Müller también cita el documento secreto, preparado para el presidente Regan por el Comité de Santa Fe en 1980 (es decir cuatro años antes de la primera Instrucción vaticana sobre la teología de la liberación), en el que se solicitaba al gobierno de los Estados Unidos de América que actuara con agresividad en contra de la «Teología de la liberación», culpable de haber transformado a la Iglesia católica en «arma política contra la propiedad privada y el sistema de la producción capitalista». «Es desconcertante en este documento», subraya Müller, «la desfachatez con la que sus redactores, responsables de dictaduras militares brutales y de potentes oligarquías, hacen de sus intereses por la propiedad privada y por el sistema productivo capitalista el parámetro de lo que debe  valer como criterio cristiano».
