A finales del año pasado participé en tres encuentros con grupos de oración sobre el tema arte y meditación.

Toda obra de arte es sacramento, signo sensible de que lo que no se ve es, sin embargo, lo que el signo expresa. De él parten signos polisémicos. Él le ‘habla’ a cada observador. Y éste establece con el signo una relación sujeto-sujeto, dialógica, interactiva.

El arte nos despierta la intuición y la emoción. Nos re-liga con algo que, hasta entonces, escapaba a la razón. De ahí su relación con la religión. Ésta emite señales que no son controladas ni por el artista ni por el espectador.

El arte, como la meditación, nos induce a sumergirnos en el propio yo, allá donde el ego se deshace cual botón de rosa para abrirse en flor y nos aproxima a la idea de belleza y armonía. Nos eleva, nos hace palpar el Misterio, balbucear lo impronunciable.

Al contemplar o disfrutar de la obra de arte -pintura, música, ballet- se metaboliza en nuestra sensibilidad. Al meditar concentramos los cinco sentidos en el núcleo axial que nos remite al verdadero yo y que, en verdad, es algo distinto que fundamenta nuestra verdadera identidad.

¿Qué es hoy día una obra de arte? Se da una desacralización del arte. El inicio de ese proceso tal vez pueda ser señalado por la obra «La fuente”, de Marcel Duchamp, de 1917, y representativa del dadaísmo. Se trata de un orinal de porcelana, idéntico a otros miles encontrados en mingitorios públicos. Se encuentra expuesto en París y asegurado en 3 millones de euros.

Ahora el valor de la obra de arte, su aceptación por el público, tiene mucho que ver con la fama del artista. Igual que los cantantes pop. Es el mercado, apoyado en los medios de comunicación, el que determina lo que tiene o no tiene valor.

Muchos artistas han muerto sin verse reconocidos, como Van Gogh, que en su vida nunca vendió un cuadro. Una vez incluso se presentó ante su médico con el cuadro «Muchacho con quepis”, lo que el doctor aprovechó para tapar un agujero en el gallinero de su casa… Hace pocos años dicha tela fue vendida por US$ 15 millones.

Todo artista se cree digno de valor y reconocimiento. Sin embargo eso depende de los críticos, de los medios, de la reacción del público. Son raros los que, incluso sin caer en el gusto del mercado, permanecen fieles a su talento creativo.

Lo que puede ser admirado hoy, puede ser despreciado mañana. Es el caso de uno de los dos autorretratos de Rembrant: cada vez que salía de Holanda el cuadro era asegurado en US$ 4 millones. Una comisión de peritos y de críticos que analizó todos los cuadros atribuidos al genial pintor holandés concluyó que uno de los autorretratos, aunque fue firmado con su nombre, no puede ser atribuido a él; la obra cayó en el ostracismo…

Nuestro ojo, nuestra sensibilidad para la obra de arte, están condicionados por la opinión pública, la cual tiende a ser elitista. Considera arte lo que atrae al público comprador; y folclore lo que atrae a personas desprovistas de recursos.

No me agrada la adjetivación «arte popular”, categoría en la que suelen entrar las obras de todos cuantos carecen de erudición artística, ni frecuentan los círculos que se reúnen en galerías sofisticadas o en palcos refinados.

La meditación, como el arte, exige cuidado, ascesis, empeño, confianza en la propia capacidad creativa. Tanto el arte como la meditación nos conectan con lo Transcendente, nos hacen salir de la esfera de la necesidad a la de la gratuidad, ensanchan en nosotros potencialidades que nos permiten ‘renacer’.

No es por nada que las religiones, sobre todo en sus liturgias, recurren tanto al arte y han sido, a lo largo de la historia, escuelas de artistas. ¡Cuántos cantores y músicos estadounidenses han comenzado su carrera artística en las iglesias evangélicas!

Por desgracia el mercado nos impone, a través de los medios espectaculares, el mero entretenimiento como si fuera una obra de arte. En eso se parecen a las liturgias que exacerban nuestra emoción sin acrecentar en nada nuestra razón ni, mucho menos, el carácter ético de nuestra acción. Vean, si no, a las coristas.

El arte no debe ser de izquierdas ni de derechas, moralista o inescrupuloso. Ha de ser bello. Nos consta que estaban desnudas todas las esculturas y las figuras pintadas por Miguelángel en el Vaticano. Pero llegó un papa escrupuloso y le pidió a Daniele Valterra, discípulo del genial artista, que cubriera con una pincelada los órganos genitales… censura quitada recientemente por peritos japoneses. Valterra se ganó el apodo de «El calzonazos”, «el calzoneta”…

Todo artista es un clon de Dios. Extrae de siete notas musicales, de los movimientos del cuerpo, del dibujo, del barro, del modo de contar una historia, lo que hay de hermoso en lo humano y en la naturaleza. Recrea al crear. Y siempre le hace partir de un estado de concentración comparable a la meditación.
