Una vez más hemos visto horrorizadas “la evaluación doctrinal” o llamada de atención o castigo dirigido por la Congregación de la Doctrina de la Fe a quien, según ella, sale fuera de la observancia de la correcta doctrina católica. Solo que en esta ocasión el dedo acusador no señala solo a una sola persona, sino a una institución que agrupa y representa a más de 55.000 religiosas de Estados Unidos.
Se trata de la Conferencia Nacional de las Religiosas, conocida por su sigla LRWC – Conferencia de Liderazgo Religioso Femenino. Estas religiosas a lo largo de su historia desarrollaron y aún desarrollan una amplia misión educativa por la dignidad de muchas personas y grupos, dentro y fuera de los Estados Unidos.
La mayoría de estas mujeres pertenecientes a diferentes congregaciones nacionales e internacionales, además de su formación humanista cristiana, son intelectuales y profesionales en diferentes campos del conocimiento. Son escritoras, filósofas, biólogas, teólogas y sociólogas, abogadas; tienen un amplio curriculum y competencia reconocida nacional e internacionalmente. También son educadoras, catequistas y promueven la práctica de los derechos humanos.
En muchas situaciones fueron capaces de exponer su vida en favor de personas víctimas de injusticias o se opusieron a las conductas gravemente injustas y opresivas asumidas por el gobierno de los Estados Unidos. Tuve el honor de conocer a algunas de ellas que han sido detenidas porque se pusieron en la primera fila en las manifestaciones que demandaban el cierre de la Escuela de las Américas, institución de Gobierno estadounidense que prepara a militares latinoamericanos para actuar en sus respectivos países de forma cruel y represiva. Estas religiosas son mujeres de reflexión y acción con un largo historial de servicios no sólo en su país, sino en muchos otros.
Actualmente están bajo sospecha y bajo la tutela del Vaticano. Son criticadas por estar en desacuerdo con los obispos, considerados “Los auténticos maestros de la fe y la moral”. Y además, están siendo acusadas de ser partidarias de un feminismo radical, de desviaciones de la doctrina católica romana, de complicidad en la aprobación de las uniones homosexuales y otras acusaciones que nos llegan a espantar por su anacronismo.
¿Que sería un feminismo radical? ¿Cuáles serían sus manifestaciones reales en la vida de las congregaciones religiosas femeninas? ¿Cuáles desviaciones teológicas estarían viviendo las religiosas? ¿Nosotras las mujeres estaríamos siendo vigiladas y castigadas por no conseguir ser fieles a nosotras mismas y a la tradición del Evangelio, a través de un sometimiento ciego al orden jerárquico masculino? ¿Estarán los responsables de las Congregaciones vaticanas ajenos a la gran revolución feminista mundial que tocó todos los continentes e inclusive a las congregaciones religiosas?
Muchas mujeres religiosas en los Estados Unidos y otros países son herederas, maestras y discípulas de una de las expresiones más interesantes del feminismo mundial, particularmente del feminismo teológico que se desarrolló en los Estados Unidos desde finales de la década de los sesenta. Sus ideas originales, críticas y posturas libertarias han llevado a una nueva lectura teológica, que les ha posibilitado acompañar a los movimientos de emancipación de la mujer.
De esta manera pudieron contribuir a repensar nuestra tradición religiosa cristiana en el rumbo de superar la invisibilización y la opresión de las mujeres. Crearon también espacios alternativos de formación, textos teológicos y celebrativos para que la tradición del Movimiento de Jesús no fuese abandonada por miles de personas cansadas con el peso de las normas y estructuras religiosas patriarcales.
¿Qué actitudes tomar ante ese anacronismo y la violencia simbólica de los órganos curiales y administrativos de la Iglesia Católica Romana? ¿Qué pensar de su marco de referencia filosófico rígido que asimila lo mejor del ser humano a lo masculino? ¿Qué decir acerca de su visión antropológica unilateral y misógina desde la que interpretan la tradición de Jesús?
¿Qué pensar de este tratamiento administrativo punitivo a partir del cual se nombra a un arzobispo para revisar, orientar y aprobar las decisiones tomadas por la Conferencia de Religiosas como si fuésemos incapaces de discernimiento y lucidez? ¿Seríamos acaso una empresa multinacional capitalista en la que nuestros “productos” deberían acatar los dictados de una línea de producción única? Y para mantenerla ¿debemos ser controladas como autómatas por quienes se consideran dueños y guardianes de la institución? ¿Dónde queda la libertad, la caridad, la creatividad histórica, el amor sororal y fraternal?
Al mismo tiempo que la indignación, nos invade un sentimiento de fidelidad a nuestra dignidad de mujer y el Evangelio anunciado a los pobres y marginados nos invita a reaccionar ante este acto repugnante de injusticia.
No es de ahora que los prelados y los funcionarios de la Iglesia actúan con dos pesos y dos medidas. Por un lado las altas instancias de la Iglesia Católica fueron capaces de acoger nuevamente en su seno a grupos de extrema derecha cuya historia nociva, principalmente para jóvenes y niños, es ampliamente conocida. Pienso especialmente en los Legionarios de Cristo, de Marcial Maciel (México) o en los religiosos de Monseñor Lifevre (Suiza) cuya desobediencia al papa y sus métodos coercitivos para conquistar discípulos es testimoniada por muchos.
Esta misma iglesia institucional acoge y recibe a hombres que le interesan por su poder y repudia a las mujeres que desea mantener sumisas. Con su actitud las expone a críticas ridículas difundidas incluso por medios de comunicación católicos de mala fe. En estas mujeres los prelados parecen reconocer formalmente cierto mérito cuando sus acciones se centran en aquellas tareas tradicionalmente ejercidas por las religiosas en las escuelas y en los hospitales. ¿Pero somos sólo eso?
Somos conscientes de que en ningún momento en los Estados Unidos surgió la más mínima posibilidad de que estas religiosas hubieran violado a jóvenes, adolescentes, niños y ancianos. Ninguna denuncia pública manchó su imagen. De ellas no se dice que se aliaran con los grandes bancos internacionales para su propio beneficio. Ninguna denuncia de tráfico de influencias, intercambio de favores para mantener el silencio de la impunidad. Y aún con toda esa trayectoria ninguna de ellas ha sido canonizada ni beatificada por las autoridades eclesiásticas, como sí lo hicieron en casos de hombres con poder. El reconocimiento de esas mujeres viene de las muchas comunidades y grupos cristianos o no, que comparten su vida y sus trabajos con muchas de ellas. Y estos grupos, ciertamente no callarán ante esa “evaluación doctrinal” injusta. que también los afecta directamente
Plagiando a Jesús en su Evangelio me atrevo a decir: “Tengo pena de estos hombres” que no conocen de cerca las contradicciones y las bellezas de la vida, que no permiten a sus corazones vibrar abiertamente con las alegrías y sufrimientos de las personas, que no aman el tiempo presente, que prefieren la estricta ley a la fiesta de la vida. Solo aprendieron las reglas inflexibles de una doctrina cerrada en una racionalidad ya obsoleta y desde ella juzgan la fe de los demás y especialmente de las mujeres. Tal vez piensan que Dios los aprueba y se somete a ellos y a sus elucubraciones tan lejanas de los que tienen hambre de pan y justicia, de los hambrientos, los abandonados, de las prostituidas, de las violadas y olvidadas.
¿Hasta cuándo tendremos que sufrir bajo su yugo? ¿Qué postura nos inspirará el “Espíritu que sopla donde quiere” para que permanezcamos fieles a la VIDA presente en nosotros?
A las queridas hermanas estadunidenses de la LWRC mi agradecimiento, cariño y solidaridad. Si ustedes están siendo perseguidas por el bien que hacen, probablemente su trabajo producirá abundantes y buenos frutos. Sepan que, unidas a ustedes, mujeres religiosas de otros continentes no permitiremos que silencien vuestra voz. Pero si callaren por un decreto del papel, nosotras haremos de ese decreto una razón más para seguir luchando por la dignidad humana y la libertad que nos constituye.
Continuaremos de muchas maneras, anunciando el amor al prójimo como clave de comunión humana y cósmica presente en la tradición de Jesús de Nazaret y en muchas otras, aunque de diferentes maneras. Vamos a seguir tejiendo juntas en nuestro momento histórico un pedazo más de la vasta historia de afirmación de la libertad, el derecho a ser diferentes y pensar diferente y todo esto tratando de no tener miedo a ser feliz.
