Basta asomarse a la trayectoria vital de Pedro Casaldáliga y leer sus escritos, para encontrarnos con un creyente apasionado, un seguidor fiel de Jesús, identificado radicalmente con su proyecto del reino de Dios, un discípulo de Jesús entregado enteramente al servicio de los últimos, un testigo vivo de esperanza en Cristo resucitado.
Cuando Benjamín me propuso tomar parte en este acto, acepté inmediatamente, pues pienso que Pedro Casaldáliga es en estos momentos un testigo singular de seguimiento a Jesús, que nos puede estimular como pocos a promover la conversión que más necesitamos en la Iglesia: volver a Jesús, el Cristo, para centrar nuestra fe con más verdad y más fidelidad en su persona y en su proyecto del reino de Dios.
En la vida y en la persona de Pedro Casaldáliga yo escucho una llamada fuerte a volver a Jesús como la única Verdad de la que nos está permitido vivir y caminar hoy de manera creativa; el único que justifica la presencia de la Iglesia en la historia y en el mundo. Mi objetivo en esta breve comunicación y mi deseo es que podamos escuchar esta llamada a una conversión radical a Jesucristo. Sólo podré apuntar algunos rasgos.
1. Fe apasionada por Jesús
Jesús es la pasión de Casaldáliga, su razón de ser, el centro de su vida, la clave de su existencia. Por eso, desea contagiar a todos, no una fe rutinaria, apagada y gastada, sino su fe ardiente, la que le quema a él por dentro:
Ya sé que hace mucho que lo sabéis,
que os lo dicen, que lo sabéis fríamente
porque os lo dicen con palabras frías…
Yo quiero que lo sepáis de golpe,
hoy, quizá por primera vez,
absortos, desconcertados, libres de todo mito…
Quiero que os lo diga el Espíritu
¡como un hachazo en tronco vivo!
Quiero que lo sintáis como una oleada de sangre
en el corazón de la rutina.
Quiero que tropecéis con Él como se tropieza con la puerta de la Casa…
Quiero que lo encontréis, en un total abrazo,
Compañero, Amor, Respuesta…
No podéis negarme que lo estáis esperando,
con la loca carencia de vuestra vida repudiada
como se espera el aliento para salir de la asfixia…
Se llama Jesús
Se llama como nos llamaríamos
si fuéramos de verdad nosotros
(Al acecho del Reino, p.332-333)
Así hemos de contagiarnos la fe en Jesús, no con palabras frías sino ardientes, como «una oleada de sangre nueva» que nos arranque de la rutina y de la mediocridad, como el «aliento» que necesitamos para salir de la asfixia de una religión vivida sin conversión a Jesús
2. ¿Quién es Jesús?
¿Quién es este Jesús, al que, según Pedro Casaldáliga esperamos «como el aliento para salir de la asfixia», al que podemos encontrar «en un total abrazo: Compañero, Amor, Respuesta». Así lo describe Pedro en poema dirigido a María.
«Enséñanos aquel Jesús verdadero,
carne de tu carne, raza de tu pueblo, Verbo de tu Dios;
más nuestro que tuyo, más del pueblo que de casa,
más del mundo que de Israel, más del Reino que de la Iglesia
Aquel Jesús que por el Reino del Padre, se arrancó de tus brazos de madre
Y se entregó a la muchedumbre,
sólo y compasivo, poderoso y servidor, amado y traicionado,
fiel ante los sueños de su Pueblo,
fiel contra los intereses del Templo,
fiel bajo las lanzas del Pretorio,
fiel hasta la soledad de la muerte»
(Pedro Casaldáliga, p96)
Este es el Jesús que necesitamos recuperar en la Iglesia. Un Jesús vivo y concreto, que atrae e interpela, que sacude y enamora, un Jesús al que se puede seguir y amar como a nadie.
3. Fidelidad a Jesús
Toda la vida de Pedro está transida por el deseo de ser fiel a Jesús, de seguir siempre sus pasos, creer sólo en su Dios. Así habla en un pequeño poema titulado «Jesús de Nazaret».
¿Cómo dejarte ser sólo tú mismo,
sin reducirte, sin manipularte?
¿Cómo creyendo en Ti no proclamarte,
igual, mayor, mejor que el Cristianismo?…
Jesús de Nazaret, hijo y hermano,
Viviente en Dios y pan en nuestra mano,
camino y compañero de jornada,
Libertador total de nuestras vidas
que vienes, junto al mar, con la alborada,
las brasas y las llagas encendidas
(Al acecho del Reino, p.328)
Hemos de recuperar a Jesús como lo mejor, lo más valioso que tenemos en la Iglesia. Recuperar nuestra identidad irrenunciable de seguidores de Jesús. Caminar hacia una nueva fase de cristianismo, más inspirado y motivado por Jesús.
4. Al acecho del Reino
Seguir a Jesús significa para P. Casaldáliga identificarse con el proyecto del Reino de Dios y vivir entregado enteramente a construir un Reino de igualdad y fraternidad. El reino de Dios es el horizonte de todo su ser y su hacer. Lo dice continuamente:
«Al acecho del Reino diferente,
voy amando las cosas y la gente,
ciudadano de todo y extranjero»
(Al acecho del Reino, p.42)
«Sabed: del Pueblo vengo, al Reino voy»
(Al acecho del Reino, p.42)
Casaldáliga vive en la Iglesia pero tiene siempre como horizonte y como proyecto el Reino de Dios:
«Yo, pecador y obispo, me confieso
de soñar con la Iglesia
vestida sólo de Evangelio y sandalias,
de creer en la Iglesia,
a pesar de la Iglesia algunas veces;
de creer en el Reino, en todo caso
caminando en la Iglesia»
(Todavía estas palabras, p.56)
Un reino de Dios, no en los cielos sino en la tierra. «El problema de la tierra es un problema teológico urgentemente pastoral: «Tierra de Dios, Tierra de los hermanos» (Al acecho del Reino, p.81). El Reino de Dios que es comunidad fraterna, igualdad efectiva, comunión real de bienes, subversión de los intereses, demolición de ídolos.
(Al acecho del Reino, p.47)
5. Lo primero, los pobres
La prioridad pastoral y evangélica de Pedro Casaldáliga han sido los pueblos indígenas. Por ellos se ha gastado y desvivido. Por ellos ha puesto en peligro su vida en diferentes ocasiones. Por ellos ha vivido amenazado, rechazado, discutido y odiado. ¿Por qué son para él los primeros? Por dos motivos: Primero porque son los más pobres, como personas y como pueblo. Segundo, porque «son los seres más evangélicos, porque siendo los más pobres, los más pequeños, los más desamparados, son también los más libres de espíritu, los más comunitarios y los que viven más armoniosamente con la naturaleza, con la tierra, con el agua, con la luz, con la fauna y con la flora» (Al acecho del Reino, p.86).
Con qué fuerza y qué verdad vive su opción por ellos. Alentado por el Espíritu de Jesús, no necesita muchas palabras para formular su opción con lucidez: «Si la opción por los pobres es ponerse al lado de los pobres y contra su pobreza y marginación, la opción que también se haga por los ricos deberá ser al lado de sus personas, pero contra su lucro y privilegio» (Al acecho del Reino, p.49)
Sólo voy a recoger aquí un grito de Pedro y un breve poema. Primero, el grito: «Todo es relativo menos Dios y el hambre». El único absoluto es Dios, Dios al lado de las víctimas, los hambrientos, los últimos Luego, el poema, titulado: ¡Esas madres!
¡Esas madres con sus hijos
que son tuyos, Padre nuestro!
¡Esas pobres de la tierra
que se mueren dando vida!
¡Ese mundo que las mata!
¡Esa casa inhabitable
que fue casa de tu Hijo!
¿Dónde estamos, Tú y nosotros,
Padre nuestro?

6. La pasión de la Esperanza
Pedro Casaldáliga vive habitado por la pasión de la utopía. Una utopía que describe así: «Una pasión escandalosamente inactual en esta hora de pragmatismos, de productividad, de mercantilismo total, de postmodernidad desesperanzada. Pero es, en otros términos, la pasión de la Esperanza; es, en términos cristianos, la pasión por el Reino, que es pasión de Dios y de su Cristo. Una pasión que, en primera y última instancia, coincide con la mejor pasión de la Humanidad misma, cuando quiere ser plenamente humana, auténticamente viva y definitivamente feliz» (Pedro Casaldáliga, p.65).
Esta pasión por la Utopía está sostenida y alimentada por su esperanza en el Resucitado:
«Yo pecador y obispo, me confieso
de abrir cada mañana la ventana del Tiempo;
de hablar como un hermano a otro hermano;
de no perder el sueño, ni el canto, ni la risa;
de cultivar la flor de la Esperanza
entre las llagas del Resucitado
(Yo, pecador y obispo, me confieso, en Todavía estas palabras, p.56)
Para conocer su esperanza militante, termino con un poema, que es todo un programa de vida de un testigo de esperanza:
Yo me atengo a lo dicho:
La justicia,
a pesar de la ley
a pesar del dinero y la limosna
La humildad,
para ser yo, verdadero.
La libertad para ser hombre,
y la pobreza,
para ser libre
La fe cristiana
para andar de noche,
y, sobre todo, para andar de día.
Y, en todo caso, hermanos
yo me atengo a lo dicho:
¡La Esperanza!

Así quisiera yo vivir en la Iglesia de hoy, aunque sea muy lejos de Pedro Casaldáliga. Con cristianos y cristianas que tratamos de seguir a Jesús, sin reducirlo ni manipularlo demasiado; sintiéndolo siempre como camino y compañero de jornada. Juntos en la Iglesia, pero en el horizonte del Reino. Poniendo en primer lugar, un poco más, a los últimos y los olvidados; trabajando por un cristianismo más fiel a Jesús, que no veremos con nuestros ojos, sino a la luz del Resucitado.
