Conozco a Dilma Rousseff desde niño. Éramos vecinos en la calle Major Lopes, en Belo Horizonte. Ella y mi hermana Teresa fueron amigas de adolescentes.
Años después Dilma y yo nos encontramos en la cárcel Tiradentes, en São Paulo. Ella en el ala femenina y yo en la masculina, con la ventaja de que yo, como religioso, obtenía permiso los domingos para monitorear la celebración litúrgica en la Torre, como se le conocía al espacio donde estaban las presas políticas.
Alumna de un colegio religioso en su juventud, dirigido por religiosas de Sión, Dilma, en la cárcel, participaba activamente en las oraciones y comentarios del Evangelio. No tenía nada de «marxista atea». Además, eran raros los presos políticos que profesaban convencidamente el ateísmo. Nuestros torturadores sí lo hacían abiertamente al profanar con toda violencia los templos vivos de Dios: sus víctimas, llevadas al palo de arara, a la picana eléctrica, al ahogamiento y a la muerte.
En el 2003 tuve un tercer encuentro con Dilma, en Brasilia, durante los dos años en que participé del gobierno de Lula.
Por esa nuestra amistad puedo asegurar que no pasa de campaña difamatoria -incluso diría terrorista- acusar a Dilma Rousseff de «abortista» o contraria a los principios evangélicos.. Si algún que otro obispo critica a Dilma es bueno recordar que, por ser obispo, ningún hombre es santo.
Unos pocos obispos en América Latina apoyaron las dictaduras militares, absolvieron a torturadores, celebraron misa en la capilla de Pinochet… Los obispos también mienten y por eso deben, como todo cristiano, orar diariamente «perdona nuestras ofensas…»
Dilma, al igual que Lula, es persona de fe cristiana, formada en la Iglesia Católica. En la línea de lo que recomienda Jesús, ella y Lula no andan propalando por ahí, como fariseos, sus convicciones religiosas. Prefieren comprobar por sus actitudes que «el árbol se conoce por sus frutos», como señala el Evangelio. Y es en la coherencia de sus acciones, en la ética de sus procedimientos políticos, en la dedicación al pueblo brasileño, donde políticos como Dilma y Lula dan testimonio de la fe que profesan.
Sobre Lula, desde las huelgas del ABC, se cuentan horrores: que, de ser elegido, tomaría las mansiones del Morumbi, en São Paulo; expropiaría empresas y haciendas productivas; implantaría el socialismo por decreto…
Pasados ya casi ocho años ¿qué vemos? Vemos un Brasil más justo, con menos miseria y mejor distribución de la riqueza, sin criminalizar movimientos sociales ni privatizar el patrimonio público, respetado internacionalmente.
En las pocas semanas que nos separan de la segunda vuelta, fuerzas de oposición al gobierno de Lula van a hacerse eco de todo tipo de chismes y mentiras. Pero no pueden alterar la esencia de una persona. En toda la trayectoria de Dilma, en todo lo que ella realizó, habló o escribió, jamás se encontrará una sola línea contraria al contenido de la fe cristiana y a los principios del Evangelio.
En cierta ocasión, relata el evangelista Mateo, le preguntaron a Jesús quiénes se salvarían. Para sorpresa de quienes le interrogaban, él no respondió que lo serían aquellos que viven golpeándose el pecho y proclamando el nombre de Dios. Ni dijo que lo serían aquellos que van a misa o al culto todos los domingos. Ni dijo que lo serían aquellos que se creen dueños de la doctrina cristiana y se erigen en jueces de sus semejantes.
La respuesta de Jesús los sorprendió: «Tuve hambre y me diste de comer, tuve sed y me diste de beber, estuve enfermo y me visitaste, desnudo y me vestiste, oprimido y me liberaste… (Mateo 25,31-46).
Jesús se colocó en el lugar de los más pobres y dijo que la salvación está al alcance de quien, por amor, busca saciar el hambre de los miserables, no se echa atrás ante las opresiones e intenta lograr para todos una vida digna y feliz.
Eso ha hecho el gobierno de Lula, según la opinión del 77% de la población brasileña, como demuestran las encuestas. De seguro que Dilma, si resulta elegida presidenta, proseguirá en la misma dirección.
