Los evangelios nos ofrecen diversas claves para entender cómo comenzaron su andadura histórica las primeras comunidades cristianas sin la presencia de Jesús al frente de sus seguidores. Tal vez, no fue todo tan sencillo como a veces lo imaginamos. ¿Cómo entendieron y vivieron su relación con él, una vez desaparecido de la tierra?

Mateo no dice una palabra de su ascensión al cielo. Termina su evangelio con una escena de despedida en una montaña de Galilea en la que Jesús les hace esta solemne promesa: «Sabed que yo estoy con vosotros todos los días hasta el fin del mundo». Los discípulos no han de sentir su ausencia. Jesús estará siempre con ellos. Pero ¿cómo?

Lucas ofrece una visión diferente. En la escena final de su evangelio, Jesús «se separa de ellos subiendo hacia el cielo». Los discípulos tienen que aceptar con todo realismo la separación: Jesús vive ya en el misterio de Dios. Pero sube al Padre «bendiciendo» a los suyos. Sus seguidores comienzan su andadura protegidos por aquella bendición con la que Jesús curaba a los enfermos, perdonaba a los pecadores y acariciaba a los pequeños.

El evangelista Juan pone en boca de Jesús unas palabras que proponen otra clave. Al despedirse de los suyos, Jesús les dice: «Yo me voy al Padre y vosotros estáis tristes… Sin embargo, os conviene que yo me vaya para que recibáis el Espíritu Santo». La tristeza de los discípulos es explicable. Desean la seguridad que les da tener a Jesús siempre junto a ellos. Es la tentación de vivir de manera infantil bajo la protección del Maestro.

La respuesta de Jesús muestra una sabia pedagogía. Su ausencia hará crecer la madurez de sus seguidores. Les deja la impronta de su Espíritu. Será él quien, en su ausencia, promoverá el crecimiento responsable y adulto de los suyos. Es bueno recordarlo en unos tiempos en que parece crecer entre nosotros el miedo a la creatividad, la tentación del inmovilismo o la nostalgia por un cristianismo pensado para otros tiempos y otra cultura.

Los cristianos hemos caído más de una vez a lo largo de la historia en la tentación de vivir el seguimiento a Jesús de manera infantil. La fiesta de la Ascensión del Señor nos recuerda que, terminada la presencia histórica de Jesús, vivimos "el tiempo del Espíritu", tiempo de creatividad y de crecimiento responsable. El Espíritu no proporciona a los seguidores de Jesús "recetas eternas". Nos da luz y aliento para ir buscando caminos siempre nuevos para reproducir hoy su actuación. Así nos conduce hacia la verdad completa de Jesús.
