«Es inconcebible que se diga a alguien ‘cristiano’ y no tome como Cristo una opción preferencial por los pobres”, dijo Romero en su homilía del 9 de septiembre de 1979. Cinco meses después, el 24 de marzo de 1980 caía abatido por una bala en su corazón.
Romero murió, lo mataron, pero vive en la esperanza del pueblo que aún escucha y sigue su legado cristiano revolucionario. Sus asesinos siguen allí, donde siempre han estado, detentando el poder.
Monseñor Romero se topó con la realidad del pueblo, una realidad de injusticia y opresión, se topó también con la esperanza de liberación, afirmó Jon Sobrino. Por eso, lo llamamos pastor, profeta y mártir, San Romero de América, «son palabras que lo distinguen con gran precisión”, añadió Sobrino.
En la conferencia realizada en el Auditórium Ignacio Ellacuría, el viernes 18 de marzo, el reconocido teólogo de la liberación enfatizó que el Obispo siempre tiene que aprender de su pueblo, así como Oscar Romero.
Sobrino explicó que el obispo mártir no sólo decía la verdad, sino que también la argumentaba y no le daba miedo de que el pueblo pensara, usara la razón.
«Monseñor Romero en sus homilías mencionó cuantitativamente todas las víctimas de la semana y cuando tenía noticias, mencionaba quienes fueron los criminales, las circunstancias precisas en las que ocurrieron los hechos y mencionaba a los familiares de las víctimas”.
Parafraseando a un campesino, Monseñor Romero dijo la verdad y nos entendió a nosotros de pobres. Romero, según Sobrino, luchó contra la mentira, aquella que se representaba a través de personas, de militares, de paramilitares y políticos.
«Un cristiano que se solidariza con la parte opresora no es verdadero cristiano”, predicó Romero en la homilía del 16 de septiembre de 1979. «Surge siempre la necesidad de unas estructuras de justicia, de distribución, mejores que las que nos dominan”.
Jon Sobrino reiteró que su modo de decir la verdad, lo llevó a ser pionero en la defensa de los derechos humanos y a ser reconocido y aceptado con gran cariño por la población.
«Yo quisiera hacer aquí un llamamiento a los queridos cristianos: no les está prohibido organizarse, es un derecho, y en ciertos momentos, como hoy, es también un deber, porque las reivindicaciones sociales, políticas, tienen que ser, no de hombres aislados, sino que de la fuerza de un pueblo que clama unido por sus justos derechos. El pecado no es organizarse; el pecado es, para un cristiano, perder la perspectiva de Dios”, predicaba Romero desde Catedral Metropolitana.
Sobre la visita de Obama
Monseñor Ricardo Urioste, presidente de la Fundación Monseñor Romero, manifestó a Diario Co Latino que Romero se inspiró en Jesús para decir la verdad, para tener la honestidad que tuvo en vida en aquel momento tan difícil.
Asimismo, sobre la llegada de Barack Obama, mandatario estadounidense, a la cripta de Catedral para visitar la tumba de Monseñor Romero, el presidente de la fundación, Monseñor Urioste, dijo que es un «reconocimiento del Gobierno de Estados Unidos sobre la figura de Monseñor Romero y de lo que significó para El Salvador”.
Urioste es de la idea que el Presidente Obama «es alguien que piensa de manera diferente a los anteriores” y explicó que es una decisión muy buena el visitar la Cripta de Monseñor Romero, así como lo han hecho otros Presidentes de la región entre ellos, Lugo de Paraguay, Rafael Correa de Ecuador y el ex presidente Lula de Brasil.
«Yo creo que los que verdaderamente quieren gobernar al pueblo para un verdadero bien, tienen que contar con la sincera participación del pueblo noble de El Salvador y no usar ese nombre sólo como escalera para subir, y después, no se le tiene en cuenta al verdadero pueblo, que es al que tienen que servir desde el gobierno”, alertó Monseñor Romero, sobre el papel de los Gobernantes en la homilía 6 de enero de 1980.
«No idolatren sus riquezas”: Monseñor Romero
Este sábado por la tarde inicia la acostumbrada procesión de los farolitos desde la Plaza de las Américas, conocida como Salvador del Mundo, hacia Catedral Metropolitana para conmemorar los 31 años del asesinato del pastor mártir.
Décadas después de su martirio, a manos de los Escuadrones de la Muerte, su mensaje sigue vigente y su vida es un ejemplo para las nuevas generaciones. El Gobierno de Mauricio Funes, el primer Gobierno de izquierda electo en el país, lo catalogó como el guía espiritual de la nación.
«No me consideren ni juez ni enemigo. Soy simplemente el pastor, el hermano, el amigo de este pueblo que sabe de sus sufrimientos, de sus hambres, de sus angustias; y en nombre de esas voces yo levanto mi voz para decir: no idolatren sus riquezas, no las salven de manera que dejen morir de hambre a los demás”, dijo Romero a la oligarquía de El Salvador, en la Homilía del 6 de enero de 1980, dos meses antes de morir.
En 2010 la Asamblea Legislativa de El Salvador declaró el día 24 de marzo de cada año como «Día Nacional de Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez”. Además ese mismo año la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas proclamó el 24 de marzo como «Día Internacional por el Derecho a la Verdad acerca de las graves Violaciones de los Derechos Humanos y la Dignidad de las Víctimas”, como homenaje al trabajo pastoral de Monseñor Romero.
«El mensaje revolucionario del pueblo, El grito de liberación de nuestro pueblo es un clamor que sube hasta Dios y que ya nada ni nadie lo puede detener”, aseguró San Romero de América el 27 de enero de 1980.
