Este es el lema que la Fundación Monseñor Romero ha escogido para conmemorar el XXXI aniversario del martirio de quien es considerado un hombre de Dios, un seguidor ejemplar de Jesús de Nazaret, un verdadero profeta, un buen pastor y un hombre de Iglesia; hablamos de Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero. El lema puede interpretarse al menos de dos formas: primero, una referencia a la juventud de los pueblos, es decir, a la dimensión de esperanza, vitalidad e idealismo que pueden y deben tener los hombres y mujeres de las distintas naciones; esa fuerza positiva, claro está, para cultivarla requiere de referentes éticos que la inspiren y dinamicen. Está probado de que Monseñor Romero es para muchos un referente en ese sentido. Pero también cabe otra interpretación, la referida al significado que puede tener Monseñor para un sector importante de la sociedad: los jóvenes. No está demás decir que el porcentaje de población adolescente y joven en El Salvador es uno de los más elevados de Latinoamérica: uno de cada cinco personas en el país es adolescente (entre 10 y 17 años), el número se incrementa a una de cada tres personas si incluimos a jóvenes entre los 19 y 24 años de edad. ¿En qué sentido este sector puede renacer desde el legado de monseñor Romero? Esta pregunta es la que trataremos de responder en las siguientes líneas.
No sabemos qué hubiera dicho monseñor a los jóvenes de hoy considerando las nuevas circunstancias con sus propios desafíos; probablemente, más que sus palabras seguiría atrayendo de él, entre los jóvenes, su vida, su compromiso, su ser distinto al sistema establecido, que existía ayer como hoy. Sin duda alguna, se ocuparía de esa juventud sin oportunidades, víctima de la violencia, sin estima, emigrante y sin futuro. Seguiría creyendo en la juventud como signo de renovación, sin ignorar las situaciones negativas que les afectan seriamente: la pobreza, la crisis familiar, y su permeabilidad a las nuevas formas de expresiones culturales, entre otras.
Hoy día uno de los factores que impiden que la juventud se constituya en una fuerza renovadora, valiente y positiva, lo representa un modo de vida típico de las llamadas sociedades modernas, que suele proponerse como modelo a seguir: hablamos de la vida light. La palabra light, en principio, tiene una connotación positiva con respecto a la alimentación y su vínculo con la salud: gaseosa sin azúcar, cerveza sin alcohol, tabaco sin nicotina, café sin cafeína, queso sin grasa, etc. Pero también tiene una connotación negativa con respecto al modelo de vida predominante; la vida light se caracteriza porque todo carece de interés y la esencia de las cosas ya no importa, sólo lo superficial tiene valor; lo importante es seducir, provocar y ser divertido, ya no interesan los contenidos. La consecuencia de esto es una mediocridad pública, una socialización de la trivialidad y de lo mediocre. Se da un ascenso del egoísmo humano, de la insolidaridad, de una sociedad indiferente o apática hacia los otros. Surge la vida sin ideales, sin utopías, sin sueños, sin proyectos, sin incidencia en la realidad. Hay un dejarse llevar por la vida light: sexo sin amor, paternidad sin responsabilidad, diversión sin freno, política sin ética, economía sin equidad, religión sin espiritualidad, consumismo sin límites.
Ahora bien, ¿en los mensajes que Monseñor dirigió en su tiempo a los jóvenes podemos encontrar elementos contraculturales para esta forma de vida? Creemos que sí, y citamos al menos tres: la cultura de un desarrollo incluyente; el cultivo del espíritu crítico y creativo; y el fomento de la espiritualidad. Tres aspectos que pueden revitalizar la juventud de los pueblos en los dos sentidos que hemos mencionado. Veámoslos brevemente.La cultura de un desarrollo incluyente. Decía Monseñor: «Hay que darle a la juventud, a la niñez de hoy, una sociedad, un ambiente, unas condiciones donde pueda desarrollar plenamente la vocación que Dios le ha dado… Hay que proporcionar al ambiente unas situaciones en que el hombre, imagen de Dios, pueda de veras resplandecer en el mundo como una imagen de Dios, participar en el bien común de la república, participar en aquellos bienes que Dios ha creado para todos” (homilía 7/05/78). Tenemos aquí un primer desafío que sigue siendo actual: los jóvenes deben tener acceso a la igualdad de oportunidades para desplegar sus potencialidades, especialmente, se deben crear oportunidades de educación y empleo; educación de calidad y empleo decente. Con el aumento de los jóvenes que ni trabajan ni estudian, el país desaprovecha un potencial y éstos se vuelven vulnerables al crimen organizado, o se ven forzados a la peligrosa aventura de la emigración.
El cultivo del espíritu crítico y creativo. Exhortaba Monseñor Romero: «Tiene que proponer la Iglesia…una educación que haga de los hombres sujetos de su propio desarrollo, protagonistas de la historia. No masa pasiva, conformista, sino hombres que sepan lucir su inteligencia, su creatividad, su voluntad para el servicio común de la patria” (homilía 15/01/1978). Un segundo desafío que puede considerarse como estratégico: replantearse la necesidad de nuevos objetivos educativos. La educación no debe ni puede reducirse a mero adoctrinamiento, preparación profesional o a un proceso de adaptación social, sino que ha de entenderse como participación en el quehacer del propio crecimiento y del progreso social, o como procesos que permiten a la persona hacer realidad sus capacidades y talentos. Opción típicamente cristiana: convertir al educando en sujeto de su propio desarrollo.
El fomento de la espiritualidad. En la fiesta de Pentecostés de 1978, Monseñor Romero proclamó: «Jóvenes, en ustedes la Iglesia se renueva, en ustedes el Espíritu de Dios es como agua fecunda para la humanidad de esta arquidiócesis que vive en esta noche un Pentecostés no sólo en su Catedral, sino en todo el ámbito de sus fronteras, gracias a que ha habido mártires que han sido nobles…Que ustedes sean ese reverdecer” (vigilia de Pentecostés, 13/04/78). Un tercer desafío que tiene las características de necesario y urgente: desarrollar la espiritualidad entendida como apertura a lo que nos hace mejores seres humanos: el Dios de Jesús, para los cristianos. Esa apertura nos capacita para vivir y convivir en profundidad el amor, la solidaridad compasiva y la indignación profética como verdadero sentido de la vida, opuesto al sinsentido de la vida light, y auténtica fuerza para que renazca la juventud de los pueblos.
