Hai uns días coñecíamos que Samuel Ruiz finaba en México, pero con el non marchaba o seu exemplo de dignidade, xustiza e compromiso polos empobrecidos. O xornal El País publicou esta nova sobre o bispo mexicano na que repasa a súa personalidade:
Chiapas ganó fama por la revuelta de los zapatistas, pero también porque allí se desarrolló una valiente experiencia religiosa en la segunda mitad del siglo pasado. La lideró Samuel Ruiz, uno de los prelados más legendarios del planeta cristiano, cuya opción por los pobres le costó atentados (contra él y su hermana) y disgustos sin cuento. Ha muerto este lunes a los 86 años en un hospital de Ciudad de México.
Los padres de Samuel Ruiz, Maclovio y Lupe, se conocieron en EE UU, a donde llegaron desde México como espaldas mojadas, es decir, como emigrantes ilegales. Regresaron apenas casarse y el primero de sus cinco hijos, Samuel, les nació en Irapuato (Guanajuato) el 3 de noviembre de 1924, se hizo cura, fue elegido para estudiar en la imponente Universidad Pontificia Gregoriana de Roma y a los 35 años era ya el más joven obispo de su país.
Pero nunca perdió el rumbo de sus orígenes. Como 500 años antes Bartolomé de Las Casas, obispo también en Chiapas y fiero defensor de los indígenas en la España de la conquista, a Samuel Ruiz le tocó remar contra corriente, no solo frente a las instituciones políticas sino, sobre todo, ante los acomodados jerarcas del Vaticano. Nunca vieron en Roma con buenos ojos su pasión por la teología de la liberación, ni que mediara entre la guerrilla del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) y el Gobierno mexicano. Pese a todo, Juan Pablo II no lo movió de la diócesis de San Cristóbal de las Casas, a donde lo envió Juan XXIII en 1960. Se jubiló en el 2000, tras cuarenta años de pontificado.
Entre sus fundaciones, destaca el Centro Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas, que abrió las puertas en 1989. En 2009 recibió el premio que lleva el nombre del fraile español, entregado por los Príncipes de Asturias. También fue galardonado con el premio Simón Bolívar, concedido por la Unesco en 2000.
Samuel Ruiz irradió desde su modesta Chiapas una pastoral liberadora que le hizo popular en todo el mundo, en especial entre los partidarios del Concilio Vaticano II. Él había sido uno de los prelados convocados a Roma por Juan XXIII entre 1962 y 1965 y el concilio le dejó una huella profunda. Contó su experiencia a EL PAÍS, cuando vino en 2002 a Madrid como figura estelar del congreso de ese año de la Asociación de Teólogos Juan XXII.
Las dos preocupaciones del concilio iban a ser el diálogo con el ateísmo y la unidad de las iglesias, pero unos días antes de la inauguración, Juan XXIII introdujo una tercera línea: los pobres. Samuel Ruiz lamentó siempre que se torciese aquella línea. «La reflexión sobre la opción por los pobres no estaba madura porque en Europa entonces apenas había pobres», lamentó Samuel Ruiz.
Era partidario de un nuevo concilio, como el cardenal Martini. «Los concilios solo son peligrosos para la Curia. Cuando murió en pleno Vaticano II el gran Juan XXIII escuché a un monseñor de la Curia rezar por él. Que Dios le perdone el daño que ha hecho a la Iglesia con este concilio, rezaba el pobre hombre», dijo.
Sin embargo, el gran conflicto con Roma fue por su radical opción por los pobres. Decía: «La única pregunta que se nos va a hacer al fin de los tiempos es cómo tratamos al pobre. Tuve hambre y me diste de comer. Por eso, América Latina tiene sus mártires y sus santos. Primero cayeron los seglares. También entre la jerarquía que asume esta opción hay mártires, que no son, como antes, mártires de la fe, sino mártires de la justicia. Hoy se muere por optar por los pobres».
