La imagen de ese buen viejito, vestido de rojo y con un saco a la espalda, bonachón, que da buenos consejos a los niños es la figura predominante en las calles y tiendas en tiempo de Navidad. Su patria de nacimiento habría sido Laponia, en Finlandia, donde hay mucha nieve, elfos, duendes y gnomos, y donde las personas se desplazan en trineos tirados por renos.
¿Existe Papá Noel? Fue la pregunta que Virginia, una niña de 8 años, hizo a su padre. Este le respondió: «Escribe al editor del periódico. Si él te dice que existe, es que realmente existe». Eso fue lo que hizo la niña. Y recibió esta hermosa respuesta:
Sí, Virginia, Papá Noel existe. Es tan cierto como que existen el amor, la generosidad y la devoción. Y tu sabes que todo eso existe, y da más belleza y alegría a nuestra vida. ¡Qué triste sería el mundo si no hubiese Papa Noel! Sería tan triste como si no existieran niñas como tú. No existiría la fe de los niños, ni la poesía y la fantasía que hacen nuestra existencia ligera y bonita. Pero para eso tenemos que aprender a ver con los ojos del corazón y del amor. Entonces percibimos que no hay ninguna señal de que Papá Noel no exista. ¿Que si existe Papá Noel? Gracias a Dios vive y vivirá siempre que haya niños grandes y pequeños que han aprendido a ver con los ojos del corazón.
Esto es lo que más falta nos hace hoy: la capacidad de rescatar la imaginación creadora para proyectar mejores mundos y ver con el corazón. Si existiese esto, no habría tanta violencia, ni niños abandonados ni el sufrimiento de la Madre Tierra devastada.
Para los cristianos es válida la figura del niño Jesús que tirita sobre las pajas, calentado por el aliento del buey y la mula. Me dijeron que, misteriosamente, a través de uno de los ángeles que cantaban en los campos de Belén, envió a todos los niños del mundo una tarjeta de navidad que dice:
