Presentamos o último artigo escrito polo teólogo brasileiro Leonardo Boff titulado "Carta de San Francisco aos gobernantes dos pobos".

Casi al final de su vida, Francisco de Asís escribió una carta abierta a los gobernantes de los pueblos. Más de mil franciscanos, venidos de todo el mundo, reunidos e mediados de octubre en Brasilia intentaron reescribirla. Aporté mi colaboración —prohibida por el obispo local— en estos términos:

«A todos los jefes de Estado y portadores de poder de este mundo, yo fray Francisco de Asís, vuestro pequeñuelo y humilde siervo, deseo Paz y Bien.

Os escribo este mensaje con el corazón en la mano y los ojos dirigidos a lo alto en súplica.
Oigo, viniendo de todas partes, dos clamores que suben hasta el cielo. Uno es el grito de la Madre Tierra, terriblemente devastada. El otro es la queja lacerante de millones y millones de hermanas y hermanos nuestros hambrientos, enfermos y excluidos, los seres más amenazados de la creación.
Es el clamor de la injusticia ecológica y de la injusticia social que implora ser escuchado urgentemente.

Mis hermanos y hermanas constituidos en poder: en nombre de aquel que se anunció como el «soberano amante de la vida» (Sabiduría 11,26) os suplico: hagamos una alianza global en pro de la Tierra y de la vida.

Tenemos poco tiempo, y nos falta sabiduría. La rueda del calentamiento global del Planeta está girando y ya no podemos detenerla. Pero podemos disminuir su velocidad e impedir sus efectos catastróficos.

No queremos que nuestra Madre Tierra, para salvar otras vidas amenazadas por nosotros, se vea obligada a excluirnos de su propio cuerpo y de la comunidad de los seres vivos.
Durante demasiado tiempo nos hemos comportado como un Satán, explotando y devastando los ecosistemas, cuando nuestra vocación es ser el Ángel Bueno, el Cuidador y el Guardián de todo lo que existe y vive.
Por eso, mis señoras y mis señores, os aconsejo firmemente que penséis no solamente en el desarrollo sostenible de vuestras regiones, os aconsejo que penséis en el Planeta como un todo, como la única Casa Común que tenemos para vivir, para que siga teniendo vitalidad e integridad y preserve las condiciones para nuestra existencia y para la de toda la comunidad terrenal.

La tecnociencia que ayudó a destruir, puede ayudarnos a rescatar. Y será salvadora si la razón viene acompañada de sensibilidad, de corazón, de compasión y de reverencia.

Os advierto humildemente, hermanas y hermanos míos, que si no hacéis esta alianza sagrada de cuidado y hermandad universal, deberéis rendir cuentas ante el tribunal de la humanidad y enfrentaros al Juicio del Señor de la historia.

Queremos que nuestro tiempo sea recordado como un tiempo de responsabilidad colectiva y de cuidado amoroso con la Madre Tierra y con toda la vida.

Finalmente, hermanos y hermanas, modeladores y modeladoras de nuestro futuro común: recordad que la Tierra no nos pertenece. Nosotros le pertenecemos a ella, que nos gestó como hijas e hijos queridos. Cuesta aceptar que después de tantos millones y millones de años sobre este planeta esplendoroso, tengamos que ser expulsados de él.

Por la iluminación que me viene de lo Alto, presiento que no estamos ante una tragedia de final desastroso. Estamos dentro de una crisis que nos acrisolará, nos purificará y nos hará mejores. La vida está llamada a la vida. Nacidos del polvo de las estrellas, el Señor del universo nos creó para brillar y cantar la belleza, la majestad y la grandeza de la Creación que es el espacio del Espíritu y el templo de la Santísima Trinidad, del Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo.

Si observáis todo esto que Dios me ha inspirado y os he comunicado en breves palabras, os aseguro que la Tierra volverá nuevamente a ser el Jardín del Edén y nosotros sus dedicados jardineros y cuidadores».
