La Iglesia-institución como “casta meretrix”, Leonardo Boff

Quienes han seguido las noticias de los últimos días acerca de los escándalos en el Vaticano, dados a conocer por los periódicos italianos La Repubblica y La Stampa, refiriéndose a un informe de 300 páginas sobre el estado de la curia vaticana, preparado por tres cardenales designados a tal efecto, naturalmente han debido quedar horrorizados. Me puedo imaginar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas piadosos que, fruto de un tipo de catequesis exaltatoria del Papa como “el dulce Cristo en la Tierra”, deben estar sufriendo mucho, porque aman lo justo, lo verdadero y lo transparente y jamás desearían vincular su figura a las notorias fechorías de sus ayudantes y colaboradores.

El gravísimo contenido de estos informes reforzó, en mi opinión, la voluntad de renunciar del Papa. En ellos se comprobaba un ambiente de promiscuidad, de luchas de poder entre “monsignori”, una red de homosexualidad gay en el Vaticano y desvío de fondos del Banco Vaticano. Como si no bastasen los crímenes de pedofilia en tantas diócesis, que han desmoralizado profundamente a la Iglesia-institución.

Quien conoce un poco de historia de la Iglesia ̶ y los profesionales del área tenemos que estudiarla en detalle ̶ no se escandaliza. Ha habido momentos de verdadero desastre del Pontificado con Papas adúlteros, asesinos y traficantes. Desde el papa Formoso (891-896) al papa Silvestre (999-1003) se instaló según el gran historiador cardenal Baronio la «era pornocrática» de la alta jerarquía de la Iglesia. Pocos papas escaparon de ser derrocados o asesinados. Sergio III (904-911) asesinó a sus dos predecesores, Cristóbal y León V.

La gran transformación de la Iglesia como un todo sucedió, con consecuencias para toda la historia posterior, con el papa Gregorio VII en 1077. Para defender sus derechos y la libertad de la Iglesia-institución contra los reyes y príncipes que la manipulaban, publicó un artículo que lleva este significativo título «Dictatus Papae», que traducido literalmente significa «la dictadura del Papa». En este documento, él asumía todos los poderes, pudiendo juzgar a todos sin ser juzgado por nadie. El gran historiador de las ideas eclesiológicas Jean-Yves Congar, dominico, la consideraba la mayor revolución que ha habido en la Iglesia. De una Iglesia-comunidad se pasó a una institución-sociedad monárquica y absolutista, organizada en forma piramidal, que ha llegado hasta nuestros días.

Efectivamente, el canon 331 del actual Derecho Canónico se une a esta comprensión, atribuyendo al Papa poderes que en realidad no corresponderían a ningún mortal, sino sólo a Dios: «En virtud de su oficio, el Papa tiene el poder ordinario, supremo, pleno, inmediato y universal» y en algunos casos específicos, «infalible».

Este teólogo eminente, tomando mi defensa contra el proceso doctrinal impulsado por el card. Joseph Ratzinger por mi libro Iglesia: carisma y poder, escribió un artículo en La Croix (09.08.1984) sobre “El carisma del poder central”. En él decía: «El carisma del gobierno central es no tener ninguna duda. Pero no tener dudas acerca de uno mismo es, a la vez, magnífico y terrible. Es magnífico porque el carisma del centro es precisamente mantenerse firme cuando todo vacila a su alrededor. Y es terrible, porque los hombres que están en Roma tienen límites, límites en su inteligencia, límites en su vocabulario, límites en sus referencias, límites en su ángulo de visión». Y yo añadiría límites en su ética y en su moral.

Siempre se dice que la Iglesia es «santa y pecadora» y debe ser «reformada siempre». Pero eso no es lo que sucedió durante siglos, ni después del deseo explícito del Concilio Vaticano II y del actual Papa Benedicto XVI. La institución más antigua de Occidente incorporó privilegios, hábitos, costumbres políticas palaciegas y principescas, de resistencia y de oposición que prácticamente impidieron o desvirtuaron todos los intentos de reforma.

Sólo que esta vez se ha llegado a un punto de altísima desmoralización, con prácticas incluso criminales, que ya no puede ser negada y que requiere cambios fundamentales en el viejo aparato de gobierno de la Iglesia. De lo contrario, este tipo de institucionalidad tristemente envejecida y crepuscular se debilitará hasta llegar al ocaso. Los escándalos actuales siempre han existido en la curia vaticana sólo que no había un providencial Vatileaks para hacerlos públicos e indignar al Papa y a la mayoría de los cristianos.

Mi sentimiento del mundo me dice que estos males en el espacio sagrado y centro de referencia para toda la cristiandad -el Papado- (donde debería sobresalir la virtud y la santidad) son consecuencia de esta centralización absolutista del poder papal. Él hace a todos vasallos, sumisos, ávidos de estar físicamente cerca del portador del poder supremo, el Papa. Un poder absoluto, por su naturaleza, limita y hasta niega la libertad de los demás, favorece la creación de grupos de anti-poder, camarillas de burócratas de lo sagrado unas contra otras, practica ampliamente la simonía, que es la compra y venta de favores, promueve la adulación y destruye los mecanismo de transparencia. En el fondo, todos desconfían de todos. Y cada uno busca su satisfacción personal como puede. Por eso siempre ha sido problemática la observancia del celibato dentro de la curia vaticana, como se está viendo ahora con la existencia de una verdadera red de prostitución gay.

Mientras ese poder no se descentralice y no dé más participación a todos los sectores del pueblo de Dios, hombres y mujeres, en la conducción de los caminos de la Iglesia, el tumor que causa esta enfermedad perdurará. Se dice que Benedicto XVI pasará a todos los cardenales el mencionado informe para que cada uno de ellos sepa los problemas a los que tendrá que enfrentarse caso de ser elegido Papa, así como la urgencia de introducir cambios radicales. Desde la época de la Reforma se oye el grito: “Reforma en la cabeza y en los miembros”. Porque nunca ocurrió, surgió la Reforma como un gesto desesperado de los reformadores de realizar por su cuenta tal empresa.

Para ilustración de los cristianos y de aquellos interesados en los asuntos eclesiásticos, volvamos a la cuestión de los escándalos. La intención es desdramatizarlos, permitir que se tenga una noción menos idealista y a veces idólatra de la jerarquía y de la figura del Papa y liberar la libertad a la que Cristo nos ha llamado (Gálatas 5,1). En esto no hay ningún gusto por lo negativo ni el deseo de añadir desmoralización sobre desmoralización. El cristiano tiene que ser adulto, no puede dejarse infantilizar ni permitir que le nieguen conocimientos de la teología y de la historia para darse cuenta de lo humana, y demasiado humana, que puede ser la institución que nos viene de los Apóstoles.

Hay una larga tradición teológica que se refiere a la Iglesia como casta meretriz, tema abordado en detalle por un gran teólogo, amigo del Papa actual, Hans Urs von Balthasar (ver Sponsa Verbi, Einsiedeln 1971, 203-305). En varias ocasiones el teólogo J. Ratzinger se ha referido a esta denominación.

La Iglesia es una meretriz que todas las noches se entrega a la prostitución; casta porque Cristo se compadece de ella cada mañana, la lava y la ama.

El habitus meretrius de la institución, el vicio del meretricio, fue duramente criticado por los Padres de la Iglesia como san Ambrosio, san Agustín, san Jerónimo y otros. San Pedro Damián llega a llamar al mencionado Gregorio VII “Santo Satanás” (D. Romag, Compendio de historia de la Iglesia, vol 2, Petrópolis 1950, p.112). Esta dura denominación nos remite a aquella de Cristo dirigida a Pedro. Por su profesión de fe lo llama “piedra”, pero por su poca fe y por no entender los designios de Dios lo califica de “Satanás” (Evangelio de Mateo 16,23). San Pablo parece un hombre moderno hablando cuando dice a sus opositores con furia: “Ojalá sean castrados todos los que os perturban” (Gálatas 5,12).

Por tanto, existe espacio para la profecía en la Iglesia y para las denuncias de irregularidades que pueden ocurrir en el medio eclesiástico y también entre los fieles.

Me gustaría mencionar otro ejemplo tomado de un santo muy querido de la mayoría de los católicos por su candor y su bondad: san Antonio de Padua. En sus sermones, famosos en su tiempo, no es nada dulce y suave. Hace fuertes críticas a los prelados derrochadores de su tiempo. Y dice: «los obispos son perros sin ninguna vergüenza, porque de frente tienen cara de meretriz y por eso mismo no quieren avergonzarse» (uso la edición latina crítica publicada en Lisboa, 2 vol., 1895). Este fue el sermón del cuarto domingo después de Pentecostés (p. 278). En otra ocasión, llama a los obispos «monos en el tejado, presidiendo desde ahí el pueblo de Dios» (op. cit. p. 348). Y continúa: «el obispo de la Iglesia es un esclavo que pretende reinar, príncipe inicuo, león rugiente, oso hambriento de presa que despoja a los pobres» (p. 348). Por último, en la fiesta de san Pedro levanta la voz y denuncia: «Miren que Cristo dijo tres veces: apacienta, y ninguna vez esquila y ordeña… Ay de aquel que no apacienta ninguna vez y esquila y ordeña tres o más veces… es un dragón al lado del arca del Señor, que no tiene más que apariencia y no la verdad» (vol. 2, 918).

El teólogo Joseph Ratzinger explica el sentido de este tipo de denuncias proféticas: «El sentido de la profecía en realidad reside menos en algunas predicciones que en la protesta profética: protesta contra la auto-satisfacción de las instituciones, que sustituye la moral por el rito y la conversión por las ceremonias» (Das neue Volk Gottes, Düsseldorf 1969, 250; traducción en español: El nuevo pueblo de Dios, 1972).

Ratzinger critica haciendo hincapié en la separación que hicimos con referencia a la figura de Pedro: antes de la Pascua, el traidor, después de Pentecostés, el fiel. «Pedro sigue viviendo esta tensión del antes y del después, sigue siendo las dos cosas: piedra y escándalo… Eso no sucedió a lo largo de toda la historia de la Iglesia, que el Papa fuese a la vez el sucesor de Pedro, la “roca” y el “escándalo”» (Das neue Volk Gottes, op. cit. 259)?

¿Adónde queremos llegar con todo esto? Queremos llegar a reconocer que la Iglesia institución de papas, obispos y sacerdotes, se compone de hombres que pueden traicionar, negar y hacer del poder religioso negocio e instrumento de autosatisfacción. Reconocer esto es terapéutico pues nos cura de una ideología idólatra en torno a la figura del Papa, considerado prácticamente infalible. Esto es visible en los movimientos conservadores y fundamentalistas laicos católicos y también en grupos de sacerdotes. En algunos existe una verdadera papolatría que Benedicto XVI ha tratado siempre de evitar.

La crisis actual de la Iglesia ha llevado a la renuncia a un Papa que se dio cuenta de que ya no tenía la fuerza necesaria para sanar escándalos tan graves. «Impotente, tiró la toalla» con humildad. Que venga otro más joven y asuma la tarea ardua y difícil de limpiar la corrupción de la Curia vaticana y del universo de los pedófilos, y eventualmente sancione, destituya y envíe a los más obstinados a un convento para hacer penitencia y enmendar su vida.

Sólo alguien que ama a la Iglesia puede hacer las críticas que hemos hecho, citando textos de autoridades clásicas del pasado. Quien ha dejado de amar a la persona amada, se vuelve indiferente a su vida y su destino. Nosotros, por el contrario, nos hemos interesado al igual que el amigo y compañero de tribulación Hans Küng (que fue condenado por la ex-Inquisición), quizás uno de los teólogos que más ama a la Iglesia y por eso la critica.

No queremos que los cristianos cultiven ese sentimiento de abandono e indiferencia. Por malos que hayan sido sus errores y equivocaciones históricas, la Iglesia-institución guarda la memoria sagrada de Jesús y la gramática de los evangelios. Ella predica la liberación, sabiendo que son otros los que liberan y no ella.

Así y todo vale la pena estar dentro de ella, al igual que San Francisco, Dom Hélder Câmara, Juan XXIII y los notables teólogos que ayudaron a hacer el Concilio Vaticano II, y que antes de eso habían sido condenados todos por la ex-Inquisición, como de Lubac, Chenu, Congar, Rahner y otros. Hay que ayudarla a salir de esta vergüenza, alimentando más el sueño de Jesús de un Reino de justicia, paz y reconciliación con Dios y de seguimiento de su causa y su destino, que la simple y justificada indignación que fácilmente puede caer en el fariseísmo y en el moralismo.
