Lo encontró uno de los colegas con los que veía pasar los días, uno igual al siguiente, sentados en rellanos y portales intoxicados de adicciones, indiferencia, enfermedad y pobreza. Extrañado al no verle durante unos días, acudió a su choza, una de esas construcciones ruinosas que en el el ambiente se conocen como choupanas , y se topó con el cadáver de su amigo.
El forense certificó su deceso y al parecer ya llevaba varios días muerto. «Le hicieron la autopsia pero no nos dijeron la fecha exacta. Murió solito», se lamenta Hortensia, cocinera en el restaurante El Mosquito. Y es que la muerte de Suso ha generado una espontánea ola de humanidad en el vecindario para darle un lugar digno de descanso eterno ya que no lo disfrutó en vida.
Lo enterraron en Pereiró y asistieron cuatro vecinos. Ni rastro de su familia, aunque dicen que tenía una hermana abogada. Hortensia es una de las que lo conocía y lo apreciaba. Lo veía cada día yendo de casa al trabajo. «Era un chavaliño muy bueno, un niño que no se metía con nadie, nunca te faltaba al respeto», recuerda. «La vida es una escuela, es muy dura. Yo tengo hijos y si algo así les pasara me gustaría que alguien les ayudara», razona.

Decían que era inteligente, y que cuando estaba bien, se le notaba que tenía formación y que era culto. En el barrio, entre todos han hecho una colecta y ya recogieron el dinero suficiente para ponerle una lápida con su nombre. «No era un animal, era una persona y merece ser enterrado como Dios manda», argumentan en el Casco Vello. Y así será, en el número 133 de la parcela 8, donde en breve celebrarán un nuevo funeral.
Jesús la diñó a los 44 años en el mismo vecindario donde había venido al mundo. Un mes más tarde de su muerte, todo su legado seguía allí. Nadie había recogido sus pertenencias. Un murciélago de plástico y un avión de juguete cuelgan del techo envueltos en telarañas.
Al lado del catre, en la mesilla de noche queda el escaso rastro que dejó: en la costrosa mesilla de noche, al lado de lo que un día fue una cama y hoy es un colchón nauseabundo, un retrato suyo parecía estar esperando a que alguien le viniese a recoger. Junto a la foto, varios mecheros, un cuchillo, un bolígrafo y una nota que todavía recuerda: «Pedir cita para la doctora en octubre».

Suso paraba en Lobo de Mar, el local que llevaban Veli y su madre en el Casco Vello, y cuando se trasladaron también se pasaba por allí. Pero donde lo sitúan todos los que le conocían era sentado al sol frente al Bar XII, en Teófilo Llorente, o en la Cuesta de San Vicente, compartiendo tragos con amigos como el Saro, el Miluco o el Quique. Suso padecía varias patologías, además tenía un defecto al andar y era muy orgulloso. «Decía que a él no lo querían ni Dios ni el diablo. No se dejaba ayudar. Cuando se caía no dejaba que le levantaran», cuenta Veli. Prefería arrastrarse y subía la cuesta de O Berbés de rodillas, con las que se impulsaba mejor que con los pies. Un amigo suyo falleció hace poco y él decía que cuando a él le pasara lo mismo, quería que se fueran todos de cervezas para homenajearle.
La rehabilitación del Casco Vello llega tarde para las piedras y mucho más tarde para los de carne y hueso. El Casco Vello es el ataúd de los sin techo. Solo un cerebro adoquinado y un corazón lítico puede pensar que urge más humanizar las calles que la vida de las personas.
