O xornal El País publica hoxe unha reportaxe sobre a situación da muller na Igrxa Católica baixo o título: «Las más fieles, las más relegadas». Así lle dan a entrada: «La Iglesia discrimina a la mujer, su público mayoritario – Es católica practicante una de cada tres frente a uno de cada cinco varones – El Papa abona viejos roles».
«La Iglesia aboga por adecuadas medidas económicas y sociales para que la mujer encuentre en el hogar y en el trabajo su plena realización». Benedicto XVI. Barcelona, 7 de noviembre de 2010.
A Pepa Moleón no le sorprendió la frase papal. «El tema nos tiene tan agotadas…», dice con hastío esta pedagoga miembro de los grupos Mujer y Teología, vinculados a la Iglesia de base. «Con una mirada benevolente se puede considerar que el Papa admite que la mujer pueda desarrollarse como ser humano fuera del hogar y la familia. A estas alturas sería muy torpe no hacerlo, y Benedicto XVI no es torpe». A fin de cuentas, la tasa de actividad de las mujeres es ya del 52,2%, según el INE. Y la doble jornada, el pan nuestro de cada día para millones de ciudadanas y un número creciente de ciudadanos. Todo esto en un país en que las mujeres dominan entre los seguidores de la Iglesia (un tercio de la población femenina se declara católica practicante, por uno de cada cinco varones).
A estas alturas, pocos defienden, como hizo el nacionalcatolicismo, que el hogar y la procreación sean el destino natural -y único- de las mujeres. Lo que Moleón echó de menos en boca del Papa fue «una reflexión similar para el varón». «El planteamiento llevaba a que los poderes públicos nos permitan a las mujeres ese doble papel que en realidad nos supone un doble esfuerzo, porque se da por hecho que los varones quedan exentos». «Además, nosotras podemos salir fuera si dejamos el ámbito familiar asegurado, algo que para ellos ni se plantea. ¿Fue un lapsus?», se pregunta.
«No», responde Antonio García, coordinador de la Asociación Hombres por la Igualdad de Género (AHIGE). «Ese planteamiento papal va en la línea de la Iglesia. Reproduce los estereotipos sexistas tradicionales. Conduce a que la mujer no pueda liberarse de las cargas de la casa y el cuidado, de las que es la principal encargada, e impide la corresponsabilidad». «Nos habría gustado que Benedicto XVI hablara de cómo los hombres deben superar el machismo y adentrarse en el mundo de los cuidados. Eso no se plantea en la cultura católica», añade.
«La frase sería perfecta si el Papa hubiera añadido ‘sin coste para ellas», apunta Amelia Valcárcel, catedrática de Filosofía Moral y Política en la UNED. «Sería más decente que hubiera incluido a los hombres, porque sin corresponsabilidad es imposible», añade. «No hubo ni una palabra de ánimo para los 290.000 hombres que en 2009 tomaron el permiso de paternidad», lamenta Soledad Murillo, socióloga y ex secretaria general de Igualdad.
¿Qué dicen los responsables de la jerarquía tras el revuelo? Nada. La Conferencia Episcopal rechazó contestar a las preguntas de EL PAÍS sobre la polémica que ha desatado la frase papal. Tampoco quiso explicar el porqué del distinto papel que la Iglesia, defensora a ultranza de la familia tradicional, otorga a hombres y mujeres tanto en su seno como en la sociedad. Desde su punto de vista, hay cuestiones inamovibles.
El sacerdote director de la revista Ecclesia, Jesús de Las Heras, rompe una lanza: «Es bastante novedoso que el Papa pida que el trabajo doméstico sea remunerado y quien suele desempeñarlo es la mujer. Es un planteamiento audaz».
Además de las palabras, estaba la imagen. La que plasmaban las distintas atribuciones de hombres y mujeres en la consagración de la Sagrada Familia en Barcelona. La componían las monjas de la orden Auxiliares Parroquiales Religiosas de Cristo Sacerdote -dedicada a cuidar del culto- que limpiaban el altar recién ungido de la catedral y los varones que -muchos, sentados- aguardaban a que estuviera listo. «Podían haber buscado a seminaristas para hacerlo. Esa imagen es contraria a los modos y maneras de nuestro tiempo», plantea la catedrática y consejera de Estado Valcárcel. «Daba un cante esplendoroso y no hace falta enseñar tanto el plumero», ironiza. «Para Benedicto XVI ser mujer es un impedimento para acceder a lo sagrado, e incluso ha endurecido el castigo para quien ordene a mujeres, pero no lo es para que se dedique a la limpieza y al decoro de los templos», señala Murillo. «¿Cuántas de ellas reciben un salario a cambio de esa tarea?», se pregunta.
Como la frase papal, la distinta actitud de las religiosas y los sacerdotes en la consagración de la Sagrada Familia también ha levantado ronchas entre los defensores de la igualdad de género en el catolicismo, pero fuera de la jerarquía. «La imagen de las monjas es más de lo mismo. La Iglesia solo cuenta con la mujer para limpiar, y para dar catequesis si no hay hombres, que no los hay. No es justo», afirma María Assumpta Torrent, del colectivo catalán Dones en L’ Esglesia (Mujeres en la Iglesia). «La Iglesia es absolutamente misógina. Es incapaz de entrar en diálogo con la mujer, que realiza un gran trabajo parroquial, y aún la ve como portadora del pecado», reflexiona a su vez Moleón.
Las críticas por esta desigualdad de papeles en un acto litúrgico han causado sorpresa en la propia Iglesia oficial, apegada a su concepción del mundo. El sacerdote De Las Heras se quedó «a cuadros» con los reproches. «Las religiosas realizaban un servicio que, a efectos litúrgicos, no es menor», defiende. Recalca que en ese terreno la diócesis de Barcelona es muy avanzada. Pero la imagen ponía bien de manifiesto la diferencia de papeles en función del sexo para los no versados en liturgia.
«Una presencia de la mujer como la que se ofreció en la Sagrada Familia es injusta y deprimente. No es paritaria», afirma Torrent, defensora de la paridad al 50% también en el ámbito eclesial. Moleón añade: «A la jerarquía, formada por varones célibes, las mujeres le preocupamos de una manera extraña. Solo conviven con las que les sirven o con las que estamos sacando adelante gran parte del trabajo en las parroquias. No entienden nuestras necesidades, ni nos ven», afirma. Ni las nombran: «En la liturgia se utiliza la palabra hombre englobando a las mujeres, por lo que nos volvemos invisibles. Lo que no se nombra es como si no existiera».
Moleón y Torrent están entre los partidarios de abrir el sacerdocio a la mujer, pero se muestran pesimistas. «Es un tema de poder. Deja al 50% de la población al margen. Todos los domingos, en todo el planeta, se oye la voz de los varones, se difunde su mirada y no la nuestra, pero creo que se conseguirá antes el fin del celibato de los curas que el ministerio femenino», matiza la primera. «No existen razones evangélicas para impedir que haya mujeres en el sacerdocio», dice con rotundidad la segunda. El sacerdote De Las Heras cree que es «un tema cerrado»: no habrá sacerdotas. «Hay iglesias e iglesias dentro del cristianismo. Con el mismo mensaje y el mismo texto, las hay que se portan de otra manera, como la luterana, donde las mujeres llegan a obispas», replica Valcárcel.
La actitud de la Iglesia hacia las mujeres es, a juicio de muchos de los consultados, un «freno» en su propia misión evangelizadora y para el magisterio moral que defiende. «La jerarquía no puede pretender un mayor acercamiento a la sociedad con mensajes alejados del conjunto de ella», asegura la directora general del Instituto de la Mujer, Laura Seara. «Ojalá la desigualdad pasara factura a la Iglesia, pero no estoy segura», dice Torrent, que denuncia desde hace años «el techo de cristal» que sufren las mujeres en el mundo eclesiástico.
En la sociedad española, que valora de forma creciente la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres, crece el distanciamiento hacia la Iglesia. En 1975 se consideraba católico el 88% de los españoles. Ahora lo hace el 73% y son más los no practicantes, según el último barómetro del Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS). Solo el 14,5% de quienes se dicen católicos cumple el precepto de la misa dominical. En muchas iglesias quedan bancos libres y en la mayoría predominan los fieles con canas.
Si se analizan los datos por sexo, las mujeres siguen más en el ámbito católico que los hombres. Se confiesa como tal el 77,4% de las ciudadanas frente al 68,5% de los ciudadanos, a tenor del último barómetro. Va a misa al menos una vez por semana el 10,6% de ellos y el 18,5% de ellas. Según el exhaustivo estudio del CIS de 2008, el 20,5% de los hombres y el 34,8% de las mujeres se confiesan católicos practicantes. La proporción avanza con la edad. Entre los más jóvenes tiende a equipararse la actitud de desapego.
¿Cómo se explica el mayor apego femenino a una religión que se opone a los derechos reproductivos (anticoncepción, aborto) y niega a las mujeres la plena igualdad en su estructura? «El más débil tiende a buscar la ayuda del Todopoderoso», apunta Valcárcel. Murillo añade otra pieza, «la especial relación de las mujeres con la culpa, un sentimiento frecuente al percibirse como permanentes incumplidoras de la familia cuando están en el trabajo y del trabajo cuando están en la familia». Desde dentro se ven otros motivos, incluida la mayor tendencia a la espiritualidad. «La fe no se basa en la iglesia. Es un encuentro con Jesús de Nazareth, una manera de vivir que aporta felicidad al ser humano», asegura Pepa Moleón. «La fe es una vivencia personal», concluye Torrent.

Las cifras de la Iglesia católica:
– Las 69 diócesis suman un total de 23.074 parroquias. Las atienden 18.247 sacerdotes, según los datos de la Conferencia Episcopal Española. El curso pasado había contabilizados 1.262 seminaristas.
– De los religiosos que ejercen en España, el 77% son monjas (38.252 hermanas y 11.457 frailes). Además, existen más de 15.000 misioneros, entre los que figuran 109 obispos, 9.000 monjas, 4.500 religiosos y 842 sacerdotes diocesanos. El resto son laicos.
– La proporción de ciudadanos que se define como católico es del 73%, según el Barómetro de octubre del Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS). La proporción, mayor en el caso de las mujeres, cae de forma sostenida desde hace ya varias décadas.
– También cae la proporción de católicos practicantes que cumplen con la obligación del precepto dominical. Solo el 14,5% de los que se declaran católicos va a misa al menos una vez por semana. El 58% no acude casi nunca a la Iglesia, según el CIS.
– La Iglesia católica recibe una financiación millonaria del Estado: unos 6.000 millones, incluidos los conciertos educativos.
